History
Makassi originated somewhere in the Desert of the Saviour or the Dead Ones Mesa, creating large temple cities. They seem to have always been religious, as all their oldest cities are formed around a core of temple complexes, shrines, or just are temples themselves. Their history is near synonymous with the history of Empire of Laran, though they are slightly farther spread. During the first and second eras of Larani civil war. Makassi spread far into the Ever-Jungle and over Zenei, encroaching on much of the territory now held by Onkon, as well as deep into the Sotteran. The most notable of their settlements, of the ones that didn't become part of the Empire of Laran, is Nazzerath, the City of Bone.
After the second civil war, in what Laran knows as the Glory Epoch, the Lati Bia strengthened the grip that the Arakan Pantheon had on Makassi culture by making it the state religion. While not everyone followed it, as the beginnings of Lati worship can be seen here, it did a good enough job of unifying the empire and maintaining a golden age, at least for the Lati aristocracy. By this point, Lerin humans had been fully integrated into Makassi society, and Laran was beginning to resemble the Empire it is now rather than the sparse collection of Makassi Houses it was previously. It was during this time that most of the grand monuments and dead cities scattered about Diyu were constructed, as most historical record list this time as a period of terror, where anyone or anywhere could be attacked and conquered by a Lati and their armies.
After three civil wars on quick succession between different houses loyal to different Star Cults, as well as the death fo the ruling Imperial family in the chaos, the empire fully crumbled. It dissolved once more into a series of warring states, and the Star Cults began their decline. They were fully outcast from the hearts and minds of most Makassi in Larani territory with the coming fo Mul-Zamain, though their colonies, mostly in the Sotteran though some persist on Lurnei as well, held onto their beliefs, often coming into contact with the central empire for it.
Now, most Makassi are found as Lati or in the city states formed during the period before the Glory Epoch.
