The Rampant Fox, an inn and tavern in
Neyer.
For various reasons the party has found themselves all enlisted to met with a
Dwarf named Gasdren Rockseeker Gasren for an opportunity to earn
!! 10 gp !!
to help bring a wagonload of provisions to the rough-and-tumble settlement of Phandalin, a couple of days’ travel southeast of the city. Gasdren was clearly excited and more than a little secretive about his reasons for the trip, saying only that he and his brothers had found “something big,” and that he’d pay you ten
Gold pieces each for escorting his supplies safely to Barthen’s Provisions, a trading post in Phandalin. He then set out ahead of you on a
Horse, along with a warrior escort named Hildar HyghWintur, claiming he needed to arrive early to “take care of business.”
Notes:
The Rampant Fox innkeeper was an old female
Dwarf named
Bari.
He had them go inside and then told them the job was a simple protection job. Take a wagon and two oxen to Phandalin for 10gp each. He used up some family connections and favors to get these adventurers to help out. There were some suspicions about his real intent, but he was able to explain that he is busy with some business deals and there could be more jobs in the near future. He was going to head out soon with his escort to take care of some business in Phandalin. He would meet them there.
There were some questions and they proceeded to have some dinner.
The next morning they left and traveled for a few days...

You’ve spent the last few days following the High Road south from Neverwinter, and you’ve just recently veered east along the
Triboar Trail. You’ve encountered no trouble so far, but this territory can be dangerous. Bandits and outlaws have been known to lurk along the trail.

You’ve been on the
Triboar Trail for about half a day. As you come around a bend, you spot two
Dead horses sprawled about fifty feet ahead of you, blocking the path. Each has several black-feathered arrows sticking out of it. The woods press close to the trail here, with a steep embankment and dense thickets on either side.

who proceeded to attack. The battle wasn't too tough and as one was escaping they killed him.
The saddlebags have been looted. Nearby lies an empty

They searched the horses and found the packs empty with an empty
Leather map case nearby. Looking in the brush they found a rough trail. While some of the injured nursed their wounds the rest moved the

The
Goblin Trail
The trail was narrow and they easily spotted the traps.
There was a
Snare trap and then a Pit trap.
Then they came upon a clearing and a cave. As they saw the cave there was a feeling in the group as some of the training and experiences they had gone through finally made sense.

The Cragmaw Hideout
Cave Mouth
Following the goblins' trail, they came across a large cave in a hillside five miles from the scene of the ambush. A shallow stream flowed out of the cave mouth, which is screened by dense briar thickets. A narrow dry path leads into the cave on the right-hand side of the stream.
Poe spotted the two hidden goblins in the
Goblin Blind
On the east side of the stream flowing from the cave mouth, a small area in the briar thickets has been hollowed out to form a lookout post or blind. Wooden planks flatten out the briars and provide room for guards to lie hidden and watch the area-including a pair of goblins lurking there right now!

The fight wasn't hard. The
Druid had begun to start using her new ability to turn into a
Wolf. She tore out the throat of one
Goblin, a critical hit. At the same time, Poe flew up into the air and one-shot the other
Goblin.
Cave Mouth
Following the goblins’ trail, you come across a large cave in a hillside five miles from the scene of the ambush. A shallow stream flows out of the cave mouth, which is screened by dense briar thickets. A narrow dry path leads into the cave on the right-hand side of the stream.
As they entered the cave with great trepidation they found the kennel to the side.

Lead up to a small, dank chamber on the east side of the passage. The cave narrows to a steep fissure at the far end and is filled with the stench of animals. Savage snarls and the sounds of rattling chains greet your ears where two wolves are chained up just inside the opening. Each
Wolf's chain leads to an
Iron rod driven into the base of a stalagmite.
After a few unsuccessful attempts at calming down the animals, there were some discussions on the moral implications of killing chained wolves. The monk threw in a ball bearing and noticed how they tried to eat it. So they gave some rations over. Then they were able to calm down the wolves. She released one and it ran for the exit. So they let the others go.

The monk then climbed up the chimney and she spotted the boss in his lair.
They went back down the pathway and she saw a bridge ahead, but they took a side passage.
Steep Passage
The main passage from the cave mouth climbs steeply upward, the stream plunging and splashing down its west side. In the shadows, a side passage leads west across the other side of the stream. In the shadows of the ceiling to the north, you can just make out the dim shape of a rickety bridge of
Wood and rope crossing over the passage ahead of you. Another passage intersects this one, twenty feet above the floor.
As they entered the side passage they were climbing the escarpment it all came crashing down and some were injured. As they were getting their bearings they looked down the hallway they noticed some goblins and heard someone being tortured.
Goblin Den
This large cave is divided in half by a ten-foot-high escarpment. A steep natural staircase leads from the lower portion to the upper ledge. The air is hazy with the smoke of a cooking fire and pungent from the smell of poorly cured hides and unwashed goblins. As the team climbed the escarpment it fell from their weight. There were some injuries, but nothing too serious.
The team began to take out a few goblins and then it was on. As the goblins began to fall there was the sound of a loud large
Goblin who screamed out "Truce! Or this
Human dies!"
There were 2 Goblins Killed.

They made a deal with Yeemik to kill Klarg and bring back the head for the safety of Sildar.
The team then went out to the
Overpass
The stream passage continued up beyond another set of uneven steps ahead, bending eastward as it goes. A waterfall sounds out from a larger cavern somewhere ahead of you.
A rickety bridge spans the passage, connecting two tunnels that are 20 feet above the stream.
The
Goblin on the bridge was loyal to Yeemik and one of the other goblins told him to go back to Yeemik.
The team then came to the
Twin Pools Cave
This cavern is half-filled with two large pools of water. A narrow waterfall high in the eastern wall feeds the pool, which drains out the western end of the chamber to form the stream that flows out of the cave mouth below. Low fieldstone walls serve as dams holding the water in. A wide exit stands to the south, while two smaller passages
Lead west. The sound of the waterfall echoes through the cavern, making it difficult to hear.
They dispatched the 3 Goblins

Finally, they enteredKlarg's Cave
Sacks and crates of looted provisions are piled up in the south end of this large cave_ To the west, the floor slopes toward a narrow opening that descends into
Darkness. A larger opening leads north down a set of natural stone steps, the roar of falling water echoing from beyond. In the middle of the cavern, the coals of a large fire smolder.
This got a bit scarier, but in the end, they were able to kill
Klarg the
Bugbear, his mangy pet
Wolf, and two other goblins.

At this point, they once again felt that after years of training in their respective vocations things were coming together and they were open to new abilities.
They cut the head off of Klarg and searched the piles of sacks and crates. The captured stores are bulky, and the characters will need a wagon to transport them. There was a box of important-looking letters and statements in an important-looking box with a seal from "The Lionshield Coster".
In addition to the stolen provisions, Klarg has a treasure chest that contains
$$ 600 cp, 110 sp, 2 Potions of Healing, and a
Jade Frog Statuette, with tiny golden orbs for eyes $$
The frog statuette is small enough to fit in a pocket or pouch.
They went back to Hildar and were double-crossed. A fight ensued.

They were able to rescue Hildar and clear out the cavern. He promised a reward if they helped him get to the village.

He spoke of a
Wizard he was looking for and how he heard the
Dwarf had been taken to some castle. There was talk of a map to a great treasure and magic power.
They learn (more or less):
• The three Rockbreaker brothers (Gasren, Tharden, and Nundro) recently located an entrance to the long-lost Ocean Boom Cavern, site of the mines of the Phandelver’s Pact. (Share the information in the first two paragraphs of the “Background” section to the players at this time.)
• Klarg, the
Bugbear who leads this
Goblin band, had orders to waylay Gasdren. Hildar heard from the goblins that the Black
Spider sent word that the
Dwarf was to be brought to him. Hildar doesn’t know who or what the Black
Spider is.
• Gasdren had a map showing the secret location of Ocean Boom Cavern, but the goblins took it when they captured him. Sildar believes that Klarg sent the map and the
Dwarf to the chief of the Cragmaws at a place called Cragmaw Castle. Sildar doesn’t know where that might be, but he suggests someone in Phandalin might know.
• Hildar’s contact in Phandalin is a
Human Wizard named D’arno Dallbrek. The
Wizard traveled to the town two months ago to establish order there. After the Free Lords’ Alliance received no word from Iarno, Hildar decided to investigate.
Hildar promises them a reward of

for there assistance to get him to Phandlin.
They got to Phandalin and found out some gang of bandits, the Rotbrands were led by some
Wizard "The Black Spider" and have been terrorizing the town. Worse than that there was a growing
Orc encampment to the NE near
Wyvern Tor.
They delivered the cargo to the shop and the girl asked them to come back. She gave them

Wake up and that evening they get to town...
They are about 2 hours away from town when 6 Rotbrands come out from the sides of the road seeking to attack the party. Wroxi tries to talk them down, then attacks with magic missiles.

They then captured one of the ruffians. The fight was two groups against these redbrands. They garnered some intel and returned to town

The party comes together and goes to town. They talk with Hildar. The two parties spend most of the time trying to get to know each other.
They went to the manor in the morning and a boy showed them the way to a secret way.

Two of the party caught up to the town and then the party went to the trail. Going NE
Near the crossing they came across 8 goblins (two were hiding) and had a fight.
They killed 6. Iinterrogated one and found out the location of the castle being north of their position and it was full of goblinoids.

Began entering the castle. Huge battles. Waves of mobs as people opened up rooms and inadvertently notified the enemy with sounds.

As the party was about to rest a strange event occurs only for Naria, then they are ambushed by a returning war party. Rinn and Davram fall to non-lethal wounds, but
Yggdra and Luraga were not so lucky as they both take critical hits and arrows destroy their necks.

As night encroaches they
Awaken as tied up prisoners with two
Goblin guards arguing about how they want to interrupt the boss and his meeting with the lady. Droop sneaks in behind the party, cuts their ties and hands three of them potions of healing and daggers. He distracts the guards and a fight breaks out with Poe killing a guard and Droop killing the other. He tells how he came to find them and wants to help bury his friend.
Poe gives him Luraga's coin purse and then rummages through
Yggdra's stuff -- finding the journal,
Bag of Holding, and a mummified
Goblin hand -- this scares Droop who runs away instantly.
Rinn tells the story, as he knows it, of
Yggdra's
Dragon cult upbringing, Luraga's quests, and the hand and then their meeting on the ship. He takes the items and says he will carry on the quest.
They find Hildar's gear and then find an altar - a fight with four goblins leads to the death of three of them and one hiding.

Nissa goes to find the last one and is attacked by a
Grick that falls on her.
Poe runs out and goes through a door on the far wall hoping to use it for cover, but triggers a tripwire trap and the roof collapses on him. He moves so doesn't take the full force but it does seem to make such a racket and then 6 more goblins enter the fray.

Sneaking through the house they encounter two more hobgoblins a quick fight.
Then they try to sneak into the room where an old grizzled
Bugbear, King Grol, is arguing with a beautiful
Drow about payment. They fight and kill the worg, but the other two escape and they do save gasren who tells them about the cave and how he wants to mine it and he can use their assistance.

After all this the party decides to just leave for the safety of town and to reassess things.
On the way they are ambushed on the trail.
They see a bunch of goblins, a
Hobgoblin, and out comes King Grol.

Then they hear many more
Scatter and watch a few more get away. They feel safe, but create a very spooky campsite off the side with heads of the
Dead to scare off intruders.
The party gets to town and the
Halfling boy, Carp Alderleaf (who helped them sneak into the Red brand's hideout) came to meet them on the road. He said the town was redbrand free and everyone was excited they were returning.
Halia Thornton offers up the 100gp she promised since it seemed GlassStaff was no longer much of a concern.

Work for Poe if he was ever interested and she left with Gasren to speak of the mines and business. He said he would meet them at the tavern later.
The men purchased stuff at the smithy's and the rest went to the provisions store. The men caught up and some potions and other things were purchased (6 pots)
They went to the Orchard and Daran Edermath apologized for the delay on the response, but to be fair the party never stayed in town long.
He tells them how used to be a part of the
Mithral Gauntlet and the
Message they helped deliver was a
Message. To find someone to investigate the rumors of a Red
Wizard of Othay at the
Old Owl Well, a site from an ancient magical society that once prospered here. Before the rising of the Myth
Dragon. A story often used to scare children, but believed by many others.
They return to the tavern and discuss the past few days. Hildar introduces Jynx, a
Bard, who is very interested in their deeds and begins to "interview" them. She takes notes on their stories.
Then Gasren discusses his ordeals and about the caverns and The
Spider.
He offers a cut of profits if they help clear out the mines.

The entrance tunnel leads into a large cavern supported by a natural pillar of
Rock and containing three stalagmites. In the western part of the cave, behind the column of
Rock, are three bedrolls and a heap of ordinary supplies—sacks of flour, bags of salt, casks of salted meat, lanterns, flasks of lamp oil, pickaxes, shovels, and other gear. Amid the supplies, you see the body of a
Dwarf miner,
Dead for at least a week.
The northeastern section of the cavern has collapsed, forming a ten-foot-wide, twenty-foot-deep pit. A sturdy hemp rope is tied off around a nearby stalagmite and dangles down the side of the pit, at the bottom of which is a rough-hewn tunnel heading northwest and east.
They climbed down and went East. They came into the old Entrance
Many tunnels intersect at this natural, thirty-foot-high cavern. The walls are carved with simple reliefs showing
Dwarf and
Gnome miners hard at
Work. Below them, nearly two dozen skeletons in rusted scraps of
Armor are scattered across the cavern floor. Some are
Dwarf skeletons, while others are
Orc remains. Half a dozen large
Brass lanterns stand in niches or on ledges around the cavern, but none are lit.

Then used
Ranger Awareness to find all
Beasts
As Poe let his
Ranger training and attunement to the environment around him spread out in his meditation he sensed the
Beasts that lived and moved outside the cave, and in the caves the walls were thick so it made it a bit more difficult to discern all of the
Beasts in the mile of influence but he did feel a heavy presence of
Beasts to the North West.
The party decided it would be a good idea to follow the wall and go south and then to the East to find the Booms and help clear out the caverns.
As they came south they found two doors. The West door had some scratching behind it but the East was silent.
They entered the Old Guardroom
Splintered stone benches and heaps of rubble from a partially collapsed ceiling fill this room. Amid ruined stone bunks and toppled weapon racks are the bones of several dwarves and orcs.

Then they went to check out the other door.
This chamber was once an office or storeroom of some kind. A large stone counter bisects the room, set with three dusty balance scales made of
Iron. Cubby holes carved into the north wall are stuffed with dusty paper scraps. Several long-dead corpses—gnomes and orcs by their look—are sprawled across the floor.

The papers all are written in Dwarvish runes and look to be charts and accounting details. This looks to be the Assayers' Office
This chamber was once an office or storeroom of some kind. A large stone counter bisects the room, set with three dusty balance scales made of
Iron. Cubby holes carved into the north wall are stuffed with dusty paper scraps. Several long-dead corpses—gnomes and orcs by their look—are sprawled across the floor.
The party returned North and then went to the East where they came into a large room covered in Fungis
Dense carpets of
Weird fungi cover large sections of the floor in this cavern. The growth includes puffballs a foot across,
Weird shelf fungus growing on stalagmites, and large stalks and caps a good five feet tall. Some of the puffballs glow with an eerie green phosphorescence.
They realize that the fungis is poisonous if disturbed and so ...
After some discussion, it was decided to leave this area for now.
They returned to the Stirges room and another T-section with a door to the North. They began to go East and decide to backtrack and clear the door.
They listen to the door and hear faint crunching and splintering sounds with some grunts
They opened the doors to the Barracks room
Old stone bunks in orderly rows line the walls of this chamber, and a corroded
Iron brazier full of old coals stands near the middle of the room. The bones of a half dozen dwarves and orcs lie strewn about, clad in scraps of
Armor. Three gray, hunched figures squat among the remains, pawing at the scraps and gnawing on the bones.

This area consists of numerous intersecting passages. The ceilings here are only six feet high, and several of the passages end in apparantly partially excavated
Rock faces.
and then they found the old ruined storeroom
and after exploring it and finding nothing they went back to the tunnels leading North.
In this room they find a Great Cavern
Steep escarpments divide this large cavern into three sections—high ledges at either end, and a lower section in the middle. Carved stone stairs climb up to the ledges. Two large tables stand in the middle section, along with a pair of old braziers. A smaller table stands on the eastern ledge. The skeletal remains of dozens of
Dead warriors—dwarves, gnomes, orcs, and ogres—attest to the fierceness of the fighting that took place here long ago.
They began to explore this area.

Party fixed encumberance issues. -- or not…

Began to explore a bit more including 9
Then used
Ranger Awareness to find all
Beasts
As Poe let his
Ranger training and attunement to the environment around him spread out in his meditation he sensed the
Beasts that lived and moved outside the cave, and in the caves the walls were thick so it made it a bit more difficult to discern all of the
Beasts in the mile of influence but he did feel a heavy presence of
Beasts to the North West.
The party decided it would be a good idea to follow the wall and go south and then to the East to find the Booms and help clear out the caverns.
As they came south they found two doors. The West door had some scratching behind it but the East was silent.
They entered the Old Guardroom
Splintered stone benches and heaps of rubble from a partially collapsed ceiling fill this room. Amid ruined stone bunks and toppled weapon racks are the bones of several dwarves and orcs.
A fight with 11 Skeletons

This chamber was once an office or storeroom of some kind. A large stone counter bisects the room, set with three dusty balance scales made of
Iron. Cubby holes carved into the north wall are stuffed with dusty paper scraps. Several long-dead corpses—gnomes and orcs by their look—are sprawled across the floor.

The papers all are written in Dwarvish runes and look to be charts and accounting details. This looks to be the Assayers' Office

The party returned North and then went to the East where they came into a large room covered in Fungis
Dense carpets of
Weird fungi cover large sections of the floor in this cavern. The growth includes puffballs a foot across,
Weird shelf fungus growing on stalagmites, and large stalks and caps a good five feet tall. Some of the puffballs glow with an eerie green phosphorescence.
They realize that the fungis is poisonous if disturbed and so ...
After some discussion, it was decided to leave this area for now.
They returned to the Stirges room and another T-section with a door to the North. They began to go East and decide to backtrack and clear the door.
They listen to the door and hear faint crunching and splintering sounds with some grunts
They opened the doors to the Barracks room
Old stone bunks in orderly rows line the walls of this chamber, and a corroded
Iron brazier full of old coals stands near the middle of the room. The bones of a half dozen dwarves and orcs lie strewn about, clad in scraps of
Armor. Three gray, hunched figures squat among the remains, pawing at the scraps and gnawing on the bones.

Their explorations captured the interest of 10 Ghouls and a Ghast. A long and battle occurred.

The party went North and found a
Flameskull (obviously still guarding the machines for his masters), along with a shadow and 8 zombies.
They fought the creatures. Believing the
Flameskull was
Dead they put it in their bag and then went to the storage room to rest. The monk had almost died. (will
