Dragonborn

A proud race of dragon kin who hail from Nokhungaar, the lost land of the dragons. They believe that they once served a great dragon civilization, and while many believe that the true dragons are long gone, some still search. They maintain a strong military tradition, and every dragonborn is expected to learn to fight.

Basic Information

Genetics and Reproduction

An egg laying species, reproduction is culturally purely mechanical. Eggs are hatched in communal fire nests that are carefully tended by the community, and hatchlings are raised by the entire clan.

Civilization and Culture

Gender Ideals

There is no notion of gender in dragonborn society. Some who are frequent travelers or are hatched or raised in human lands will associate themselves with a different gender, but often have some different ideas about what it entails.

Courtship Ideals

Courtship is a negotiation of reproductive preferences, usually between two dragonborn with a strong bond. It is determined which clan the hatchling should be raised by (typically the same clan as one of the parents) and the clan is consulted to ensure that there are sufficient resources available to raise em.

Relationship Ideals

Bonds between dragonborn are slow to develop, but are very strong and enduring once established. Dragonborn develop strong emotional connections to those they are close to, and usually translate the nature of their relationships with their closely bonded friends using terms like "love" and "romance."   Dragonborn communicate their feelings for each other verbally and in great detail, and see no distinction between doing this in public or in private. Public expression can be awkward for members of other cultures, and confusing since they don't often view dragonborn as particularly emotional. They will express their close relationships with members of other races in the same way, and need to have appropriate settings explained to them, which they will strive to learn as best they can.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Having been removed from the other races for so long, they have difficulty understanding many of the customs of the other races. They are generally accepting of, but puzzled by, the behaviors of the other races, and travelers often approach the locals with a sense of curiosity.   The idea of stereotypes is foreign to them, as they generally consider skill, ability, honor and self sufficiency to be the most important traits of a person. They frequently enjoy the company of Half-Orcs, who are often strong warriors, or Tieflings, who are typically resourceful and self-sufficient, while being completely confused as to why they are so often shunned by Humans.   They also cannot wrap their heads around the notion of gender that the other races seem to obsess over. They use a neutral set of pronouns themselves (e, em, eir, eirs) and attempt to apply gendered pronouns correctly but often don't get it quite right.   Their physical expressions tend to be limited, preferring to communicate things explicitly and verbally. As such, they frequently come across as angry to others. Frequent travelers often attempt to mimic more human expressions, usually awkwardly.
