Anglëi Ethnicity in Deia | World Anvil

Anglëi

The Anglëi are thought to be the first, though they were not known for some long age, and their blood has since been mingled with other Men's; it is said that they built the stone circles throughout the land, and their language was made independent of all other tongues, but is not spoken by any living being outside the halls of Mjolgart.

Major language groups and dialects

Anglëan as a language seems to have two surviving dialects, both of which exist in Mëria, which are Valgrandish and Déhevolsh. Llunerian seems to adapt several words and pronunciations from Old Anglëan as well, but is not directly descended from the tongue.

Average technological level

Early Bronze Age (by our reckoning)

Common Dress code

Surviving artifacts imply rather simple clothing, primarily linens and animal skins. Both male and female articles seem designed for warmth, due to the chill of their homeland.

Art & Architecture

The only remaining architecture that can be called Anglëan is of a monolithic kind. Great stones in formations dot the North, some being found with animal skins of great size nearby, implying that at least some of these structures were covered over by a tarp for shelter. How these stones were moved is attributed to early magi thought to have been among the people.

Funerary and Memorial customs

The Anglëi buried their dead, usually near the feet of mountains, as few grave sites have been discovered in the open plains.

Common Myths and Legends

Long ago, during the Greening of Deia, Vanaya discovered the First Men in Anglëa. They were, at the time, ignorant of the Domvari, and acted in the manner of savages, felling the plants and killing animals in great droves. Seeing this, wrath grew in Vanaya, and she rebuked this upstart race. A curse she laid upon these, the forefathers of Anglëi, that they bend to the form of beasts in the night, and ravage their kith and kin until dawn arrives. For a century, this curse laid hard upon the Anglëi, but, at the behest of Illos, Vanaya came once more to the Anglëi with an offer of penance: should those afflicted with the curse commit themselves to serving Vanaya, by protecting the balance of her forests, they would have control over their curse, and use it to serve justice against those who reap too greedily of Vanaya's gifts. There were many who agreed, seeking relief from their woe, and they became the Druids. Others of the cursed, however, rebuked the offer, and are damned to roam the wilds to this day, preying on the children of Man, forever unsatisfied in their bloodlust and hatred of life.

Ideals

Beauty Ideals

Nature, above all, seemed to be valued by the Anglëi, due to how few settlements they seemed to establish. Only two true cities were ever established by them, which became Lluncastr and Lindon.

Gender Ideals

Women seemed to play the roles as gatherers of vegetation while men either went off to hunt animals or act as guards for the women, who would often bring their children along to help them. It appears that the Anglëi embodied the most basic and natural aspect of the ideals of most current Morai cultures, which further solidifies them as the eldest.

Courtship Ideals

Little is known beyond a few legends that survived in oral tradition, in which valiant warriors went in search of glorious treasures or knowledge to become better men when they returned.

Relationship Ideals

As stated in gender ideals, the women held up a role similar to men, but less dangerous in nature, being equal in their labor, but in their own way, while the men laid out their lives to do the same.
