Abyss
Where Vutualli/Rhother/Bogtin was banished after the Sundering.
Two groups of Celestials followed him - his own servants and vengeance-seeking celestials belonging to Keryth. Both were corrupted by the Abyss. His servants became Devils, and Keryth's became Demons. They have been embroiled in a Blood War for millennia.
There are pathways to the Feywild used by Night Hags (who can suppress their fiendish corruption to escape the binding) and the River Styx also leads to the Plane of Water and is commonly traversed by Yugoloths, especially Hydroloths and Merrenoloths.
A non-evil creature that finishes a long rest in the Abyss must make a DC 10 Charisma saving throw. On a failure, the creature develops minor Abyss corruption. Refer to the table below to determine the effects of this corruption. After finishing a long rest, a corrupted creature can make a DC 15 Charisma saving throw. On a successful save, the corruption effect ends. A protection from outsiders spell or any magic that removes a curse also ends the effect.
If a corrupted creature doesn't leave the plane within 1d4 + 2 days, its alignment changes to evil. Casting the protection from outsiders spell on the creature restores its original alignment.
Any creature who spends 100 years in the Abyss, regardless of alignment, must make a DC 20 Charisma saving throw. On a failure, they develop major Abyss corruption. Their type changes to fiend, they become evil if they were not already, and their physical form is altered similar to the alterations that a Sibriex can perform. This effect is difficult even for gods to undo.
A binding spell was placed on the Abyss right after they first killed it, which makes it extra difficult for any creature with Abyss corruption to plane shift out of the Abyss. A creature with minor corruption can be teleported easily by an uncorrupted creature, but must make a DC 5 spellcasting check to teleport themselves (with or without others) out of the Abyss - on a failure, they waste the spell. A creature with major Abyss corruption (any creature with the fiend type) needs the assistance of an uncorrupted being to bring them out. An uncorrupted creature attempting to teleport them out from within the Abyss must succeed on a DC 10 + the creature's CR spellcasting check or leave them behind. Effects that summon an Abyss-corrupted creature from outside the Abyss are not affected by this binding spell. In addition, Rakshasa are unaffected by this binding, and Night Hags can escape the effect by changing their typing to fey.
The Abyss was shaped like a circle, but when Laerdya dealt the final blow, he split the Abyss nearly in half. Devils mostly live on one half, Demons on the other, and the Abyss Natives at the join. The Demonweb Strands cover the opening, catching fiends as they try to escape or cross over from one side to the other.
Abyssal Corruption
d10 | Result |
---|---|
1-4 | Treachery. The character gains the following flaw: "I can only achieve my goals by making sure my companions don't achieve theirs." |
5-7 | Bloodlust. The character gains the following flaw: "I enjoy killing for its own sake, and once I start, it's hard to stop." |
8-9 | Mad Ambition. The character gains the following flaw: "I am destined to rule the Abyss, and my companions are tools to that end." |
10 | Abyssal Possession. The character is possessed by a fragment of the Abyss' shattered mind until freed by protection from outsiders or similar magic. Whenever the possessed creature rolls a 1 on an attack roll, ability check, or saving throw, the fragment takes control of the character and determines the character's behavior. (Usually acting in a fashion that serves to advance the spread of Abyssal corruption.) At the end of each of the possessed character's turns, they can make a DC 15 Charisma saving throw. On a success, the character regains control until they roll another 1. Upon regaining control, they must succeed on a DC 15 Intelligence saving throw or forget everything they did while being controlled by the fragment. |
