Appointment
When the Medical Director dies, a new one is chosen by the Attending Physicians. They will all vote for one of the existing Head of Departments to be promted into the Medical Director role. They will then vote to promote someone from the corresponding department to be the new Head of Department.
Responsibilities
The medical director is the highest level of a doctor, and they hold the most power and responsibility within the hospital. They coordinate and direct medical and health services for the entire facility. They supervise staff and conduct hiring and performance reviews. They train and mentor staff and update and enforce hospital policies, which include regulations, technology and healthcare laws. They are also in charge of the hospital's accounting and the general administration of the hospital. They determine which research projects within the hospital get funding from the hospital budget.
Grounds for Removal/Dismissal
Generally, they serve for life. However, the Head of Departments can call for a Fitness for Duty Review. This is the process in which the Head of Departments can challenge the Medical Director's ability to perform their duties. They present their case before the Attending Physicians who then vote to either maintain the Medical Director or to Annul their appointment. If the Medical Director is Anulled, a new Medical Director is then promoted into the position.
