Vokans
"We were a very proud people, us Vokans, and probably had the only successful empire. You'd think, with all our strength, we'd still be alive and ready to go."The Vokans were a dominant ethnic group of Nirkans from the northern land of Nirka, now called the North Pole. They were known for their plans to conquer Old Phadoya during the Age of Triumph. Their conquest was known as the Vokani Crusade, and their empire was known as the Vokani Empire. Despite the Vokans being characterised as violent, life in the Vokani Empire wasn't as bad for the common people as it was in some other empires during the Age of Triumph. During the Vokani Crusade, the Vokans encountered many new cultures and integrated their customs into their own. Some of the customs commonly associated with the Vokans were not actually theirs in the beginning. For example, the stories the Vokans told about the Gods were a mixture of their own and other cultures' stories. Because of how far the Vokani Empire spread, many northern cultures developed similar customs to the Vokans. At the height of the Age of Triumph, the Vokans were the only Nirkans left. The other ethnic groups that stayed in Nirka had either gone with the Vokans or died out. No-one really knows why, but not many people knew of the other groups in the first place. For a while, the Vokans went from strength to strength. But death eventually caught up with them too. About 50 years before The Ice Age, the Vokans started dying out until there was only one left, the former warrior Jericho Varki. Despite the Vokans completely dying out, their culture still survives in modern day. The entire west coast of the Known World still has heavy Vokan influences, from their art to their folklore and customs. Osuno is known for having lots of Vokan architecture, and their Pirate culture is adapted from the Vokans. Jericho Varki tries to keep Vokan culture alive in The Seafarer Shack by cooking some Vokan dishes. There is a hybrid race of Nirkans and Elves, the Nirdaya, but they do not follow all Vokan customs. The Vokans as a people are now truly gone.
