Pirate

"Being a Pirate is often hard work, but it sure is rewarding!"
— Captain Sarai of the High Sea Sailors
In the west of the Known World, there are a group of people whose life mission is to travel the world in search of valuable treasure. These are the Pirates, a seafaring people who first appeared 300 years ago. Although pirating is a profession, most Pirates are descendents of the Pirate Clans which existed (in what was then Old Phadoya) during the Age of Triumph.

Location

Pirates are mainly found in the western regions of the continent, usually because they are the poorest regions. Osuno is the country with the largest amount of Pirates, with almost 60% saying it is their main profession. In fact, the number used to be much higher, where around 9 out of 10 Osunans belonged to a Pirate Clan.   Being a Pirate is illegal in every country (bar Osuno) and the United Government will purge pirate activity out of an area or country. However, that hasn't slowed down the Pirate community. In fact, pirating has only increased across the west, due to poverty in the region and the war between Kostral and Aspait.

History

The Pirate Clans

If a person in the west goes far back enough in their lineage, they are guaranteed to find at least one Pirate there. That is because at one point, every single clan in the region was a Pirate Clan, and they lived on the coasts of Phadoya. There was abject poverty in the region, despite the massive increase in wealth during the Age of Triumph. The clans were unhappy with the state of affairs and formed the Pirate Alliance, an alliance to overthrow the government of the day.

The Pirate Alliance

The stories say that Pirate Alliance staged non-violent protests, before quickly resorting to violence. They staged a coup to overthrow the government, and it worked, after months of fighting. The Pirate Alliance became the new government and started to work towards a better society.   But not everything went well. Some clans were not happy to leave their violent or seafaring days behind them, while others were not happy with the direction the militant members of the Alliance were taking the region. The infighting eventually formed a rift between the Alliance, and it effectively ruled as two governments in one. And this split meant things got worse for the general population.

The Treasure Hunters

Eventually, after 30 or 40 years, the Pirate Alliance disbanded due to mass protest and news of another attempted coup. The Pirate Clans split and some settled into society, while others went back to their seafaring ways. But even after the change in government, the region was still very poor, and the mining industry wasn't paying very well. So the seafaring Pirate Clans started robbing treasures and artefacts from other places. First they stuck to the continent, but soon branched out into the New World and pillaged their treasures. This practice still continues today, despite the United Govt clamping down on the Pirates.
