North American Free Zone

The North American Free Zone is a federation of surviving territories and settlements located along the west coasts of what used to be Canada, the United States, and Mexico. Originally, it was made up of only three survivor colonies: Salem, Portland, and Victoria, but have rapidly incorporated smaller colonies and settlements into the organization, eventually covering land from the Nass River valley in what was British Columbia to Hermosillo in what was Sonora. Affiliated colonies go as far East as Tuscon in the South and Calgary in the North, though official borders stop long before that. The actual size of the NAFZ is misleading, as most of it's claimed territory is uninhabitable, uncharted, or otherwise lost such as in the 2039 destruction of Anaheim. 
By combining resources and funneling all extraneous supplies into New Salem, the federated colonies are able to maintain research teams and an extensive military. For the most part, each fully incorporated colony is safe and has supplies delivered to it by the federal government based on reported population. Most colonies in the NAFZ are made up of a small section of old world cities, such as New Salem itself, or the Victoria Seagate. New colonies are established regularly, though most of these missions have ended in failure. Recently, contact was made via radio with other large survivor groups, notably the Barony of New Orleans, American Survivor's League, and the Massachusetts Bay Commonwealth. 
The NAFZ is effectively a military-run state that distributes resources to each citizen individually through the use of scrip. Old world coins, but not paper currency, serve as tokens for resources in most colonies. Citizens are assigned jobs and housing. Anyone who refuses to work is expelled from the federation. Resources are distributed by train, helicopter, and ships guarded by military personnel. While most citizens are not required to become soldiers, all attend mandatory combat preparedness training and in the event of a demonic horde attack serve as a militia.
