Seraphine Myth in D&D | World Anvil

Seraphine

The Mother of Magic

An immensely powerful cosmic force and member of the Prime Three, Seraphine serves as the matron of wizards, scholars and artificers. She is a deity of discovery and knowledge who idealizes the pursuit of greater knowledge for the sake of knowledge.   Seraphine is the only member of the Prime Three known to grant power to clerics and commune with mortals, and her worshipers often dedicate their lives to honing their mental acumen and cleverness.

Archons

Knights Arcane

Seraphine has an order of eight cryptic angels known as the Knights Arcane. Their mythology paints them as immensely powerful battlemages, each with a specialization into one of the nine schools of magic. Little is known of the Knights Arcane, and the existence of a possible ninth Knight remains a subject of active study, but they are considered Seraphine's enforcers sent to reconcile wrongdoings of or against the weave of magic, as the Primordial herself would cause indescribably havoc should her true form walk the material plane.

Vecchia

Patron archon of secrets and knowledge both hidden and forbidden. Vecchia and their followers are by nature cryptic and difficult to contact.
The Vecchians are a secretive lot, so much so that many folks don't even know they exist. The initiated, or at least some people claiming to be initiated, say that Vecchia came to a thief in his hour of need and the two concluded a pact, but little else is known.   Was - or is - Vecchia fey, fiend, or simply a resourceful citizen? Unclear, however those that claim to be ingratiated into the folds of her society have found good fortune so long as they aid the unfortunate themselves.                                                                                                        - Kusa Furani, Theological Scholar, Wordsmith

Worship, Worshipers & Temples

Most wizardly or scholarly guilds pay tribute to Seraphine, to varying degrees. The Seekers pray to Diviner Seraphine to bolster their magic against deception, while the Wizards of Eight and Knights of the Tome pay tribute to all nine aspects of Seraphine throughout their studies.   Daily worship often takes the form of study, teaching, or the creation of new literary works. Traditional Seraphine faith demands this worship take place by the light of nine candles, one for each school of magic. A common wizarding practice is to scribe spell scrolls for donation to a nearby library or temple.   On the Enlightenment, faithful academics and scholars will arise in the morning, lay out their candles and begin their study. For each hour passed in study, the faithful will snuff a single candle.

Leylines

Leylines are faucets tapping into the limitless well of magic that surges, invisibly, throughout the material plane. Left unchecked, the magic pouring forth from these mystical sites warps and alters the land around it in chaotic fashion. Only by sealing the nine leylines could mortal races find the stability necessary for permanent cities, and larger society as a whole. The location of most leylines remains a closely guarded secret, however a leyline in Gottfried's Crater (southern Bedegar) and another in the Lavender Hills of Nuriliath have been made known due to disastrous and devastating events that resulted in their unsealing.

Active Research & Divine Cause

As a deity of knowledge, the acolytes of Seraphine are strongly motivated to further the study of magic, natural history, and academic pursuit in general. While worshipers of Azrael or Beryllian may hold to simple, albeit abstract, causes (e.g. protect the innocent or maintain order), Seraph priests seek specific, esoteric questions of magic and history. A select few common goals among Seraph's academe are documented here:
  • Who were the Knights Arcane?
  • Where lie the ruins of the Library of Atiosk?
  • Where have the Codex Trifecta gone? Immensely powerful texts, all vanished in less than a century.
  • Is controlled access to Leylines possible?
  • Where have the hemomancers of old gone? Why has this school of magic disappeared?
  • The holy symbol of Seraphine
