Azrael Myth in D&D | World Anvil

Azrael

The Sunbringer, The Merciful Light

Azrael, the Sunbringer, is a god of light, rebirth and mercy that favours healers and benevolent protectors. Azrael's ascension to godhood is poorly understood; the Sunbringer's own memory of ascension has been erased by forces unknown, and for purposes unclear.   The Sunbringer is revered throughout the mortal realms but worship is especially common among healers, paladins, the resurrected and the sun elves of Bharazad. In paintings and sculpture, Azrael is usually depicted as a red-winged aasimar wielding a broadsword and crowned in light.

Angels

Solaire, the Penitent

Born Alexander Louise Tristain, Solaire was slain in Blackreach during the War of the Red Scale. On the path of light since boyhood, difficult decisions led the paladin down a dark path. In his recklessness, Solaire was inadvertently responsible for the release of a shackled Balor from the depths below Blackreach. Knowing the great fiend would be his end, Solaire stood alone against the Balor to buy his allies time enough to evacuate the city.   In death, Solaire was brought to Azrael's halls in Sanctuary where he now resides, immortal and resplendent.

Sitara, the Red Sun

A long-standing member of the Order of the Sun in Bedegar, Sitara traveled with Solaire to stop the red dragon Eondris from razing all of human civilization. She entered the Order's first hall, now entrenched in the dragon tyrant's territory of Anderim. Sitara was assassinated there, betrayed by treacherous turncoats of the Order of the Sun. Her body was placed in a brazer of Azrael's holy fire and Sitara was reborn with wings of red and fires of purpose. Sitara participated in the final conflict with Eondris in Taramyr City, and lost her mortal life slaying the Dragon Queen.   Following her second death, Sitara was brought to Azrael's halls by her lost companion-turned-angel, Solaire. Her dedication and purpose make her well-suited as the Sunbringer's primary enforcer, when necessary.

Worshipers & Temples

Azrael is among the most popularly worshiped. Loved by healers and the repentant seeking mercy or forgiveness for past wrongdoings, but also depicted as a shining example of divine benevolence.

The Order of the Sun

The Order of the Sun are a group of warrior clerics that reside in the Halls of Dawn in Taramyr. Their worship hall was destroyed during the attack on Taramyr by the red dragon Eondris at the end of the War of the Red Scale, but was later rebuilt. A red-gold statue of the Red Sun now stands guard at the gates to commemorate the loss of her mortal life at the hands of Eondris.   The Order of the Sun built their first temple in Mollenrue, before the province of Anderim fell to Eondris' reign. The temple was destroyed and never rebuilt.
