The Questioner

The Questioner is a unique position within the legal system of the previous Empire, and now the Bohemian Republic. Holder of this title has the unique power to question anything, be it a law, a religious practice, tradition or a political move - without any repercussions. For as long as this office stands, no one has ever dared to move against the Questioner. There were some small assassination attempts here and there, but their instigators were collectively shunned by everyone as touching even a single hair on the Questioner's body is something you simply should not dare to do.
Originally, the Questioner used to be a part of the Inquisition that reigned by terror during the medieval era and its importance rose and fell during the subsequent times with the importance of the church. The position of the Questioner and its unique power it can wield over the society, was cemented during the Renaissance era thanks to it's holder sister Raphaela, later called Raphaela the Incorruptible. She lived during the Rocaille era, but very little is known about her life prior to her taking the religious vows. She was the eldest and only daughter of a prominent lawyer, which reflected in the way she tried to help the poor. She was far from your typical quiet and obedient nun, she frequently attended court hearings and defended those who could not defend themselves or couldn't afford a lawyer. At first, the church distanced itself from her heated arguments, but her eloquence managed to convince her superiors that such actions are needed, which led to the resurrection of an old title from the medieval times.
The Trials of Raphaela is an event in history, during which she as the very first person ever dared to challenge the emperor himself, not once, but three times in total. Their arguments are recorded in detail and are a required study material for anyone who wishes to become a lawyer, police officer or hold any important governmental office.
She is the sole reason why this position holds such a high respect among the people and those in power. There are many statues and busts representing Justice that have her likeness. The title of a Questioner can be held by one person only and they are usually elected for life (by the government in cooperation with the biggest churches and the judicial courts).
