Retribution Wastes

The Retribution Wastes is a region within the northern Kazakhs that maintains a tenuous relationship with reality. The Kazakhs region was purged of life by the Cataclysm, with the Retribution Wastes forming almost immediately thereafter. Life has started to return to the wider Kazakhs, but it is difficult for complex life to survive in the Wastes.   Reality within the Retribution Wastes is continually shifting, with regions within the Wastes taking on different properties every few hours. Sometimes a region might lose gravity, or any distance in that area being instantaneously traversed, or life spawning and thriving temporarily. Any life that enters the Wastes tends to exit it altered, becoming a Retribution Beast. Most of these beasts are highly dangerous, though some are docile or even having beneficial uses, like the Budding Cattle or the Greater Silkworm.   Most people within Crossroads avoid the wastes, although occasional bands of warriors or fanatics journey into the Retribution, most never heard from again, or later emerging as Retribution beasts. The northern boarder of the Wastes are patrolled by the Russian military, while the eastern boarder is patrolled by the Chinese military, and the southern boarder is patrolled by an increasing number of religious warriors. Still, many Retribution beasts make it through the patrols into the Crossroads region, necessitating any travelers to be armed.   The Retribution River flows south from the Wastes, although scholars have been unable to account for why a consistent drinkable water source is able to be sustained by the Wastes. Fish swim in the river, most unaltered and perfectly edible, although Lyashino Yōsai slays the occasional river-beast.
