Lyashino Yōsai (Healing Fortress)

Purpose / Function

Lyashino Yōsai is built on the northernmost point of the Retribution River, just after it leaves the Retribution Wastes. The fortress was commissioned by the Japanese Emperor to establish a Shinto presence in the region, so that the kami may be calmed and the Retribution staved off. With the Shinto value of water and the natural, the decision was made to build the fortress on the river. The location extremely close to the Retribution allows the Shinto warriors to defend the river from Retribution river-beasts, and enables the Shinto priests to have easy access to the kami of the Retribution (the existence of which the western religions dispute).   This shine-fortress also functions as a staging area for bands of samurai to patrol the retribution boarder for invading yōkai. They are assisted by (and occasionally come into conflict with) warriors of the other faiths, the most valued of whom earn the honor of being allowed into the shrine-fortress.   It is at this fortress that the continual streams of Japanese caravans reach their end, depositing their people and supplies. Some of the caravan-leaders settle in the region, others return to Japan for another round of honor and profit.

Alterations

Lyashino Yōsai is continually getting additions and improvements. Its third set of walls is being constructed, and two double-layered steel portcullises control access to the waterway flowing through the shrine-fortress, with a sealable murder-hole to trap, capture, and kill river-beasts (although some are kept alive for the wealth the industrialists will pay for them).
