Shintoists

The Shintoists arrived in Crossroads in 1838, as a part of a concentrated national effort to heal the Retribution Wastes and prevent further damage to the area by the other powers. Emperor Ninkō funds the constant streams of caravans that bring supplies, priests and warriors to the area, and called for the creation of a shrine at the mouth of the Retribution River. This location was deemed necessary to calm the angered Kami and slay the yōkai that would enter the region through the waterway. The shrine eventually became Lyashino Yōsai, more of a fortress than anything.

The Shinto's play a much more secluded role in the development of Crossroads. Their numbers are small in Crossroads Proper, and only a couple small shrines exist in the city. The bulk of the settlers live in and around Lyashino Yōsai, and focus their efforts on the sacred task entrusted to them by Emperor Ninkō. Conflict between them and members of the other religions is rare, and typically only happens within Crossroads Proper, though there have been minor incidents of roving mercenary bands beholden to a specific religious group attacking the farmers living behind the walls of the shrine-fortress.

The Shintoists make most of their money through the selling of the yōkai they kill and capture to the Protestants. Said money is spend primarily on supplies, and what little is left is used to continue building up the protections of the fortress.

They also employ roving bands of samurai, who travel along the border of the Wastes to stave off any yōkai that wander into the area. Often these groups work alongside other religious mercenaries, but it is not uncommon for disputes between these groups to turn violent.

Structure

The Shintoists are led by Emperor Ninkō of Japan, and follow his decrees above all else. However, since he rules from the homeland, within Crossroads the Shinto group has no formal leading figure. Instead, the shrine-fortress is run by the head priests and the most well-respected samurai.
