Emsky Yakovich
Emsky Yakovich grew up in Crossroads Proper, attending mass at the Cathedral of Penitent Salvation every Sunday with his family. He's a devout Orthodox, and would regularly get into fights with anyone who had a negative opinion on the church and its ideals. Most days after school and chores were finished, he could be found tailing the Orthodox mercenary groups that kept order in the Orthodox sections of the town. He liked to join in on their patrols, and always carried a stick around with him which he liked to pretend was a sword. He and his friends particularly loved playing "Mercenaries vs Monsters", where they beat up a weaker kid, pretending that kid was one of the dangerous Retribution Beasts.
Upon reaching the age of 16, Emsky joined the ranks of the Orthodox Mercenaries. As a new recruit, he was given a rusty sword and 3 days of training, before heading out on various expeditions to heal the Retribution Wastes. Death was commonplace on these trips, but Emsky always managed to return regardless of how bad the losses were.
As the years went on, Emsky worked his way up the ranks. He became known as a fearless and efficient leader, refusing to quit if a task was unfinished and utterly ruthless to those who disobeyed orders. Most people who went out on an expedition with him came back scared of him, and through that fear he inspired obedience. Eventually he was given command of his own unit, and control over what they went.
Using this newfound power, he began venturing further into the Wastes than anyone ever had before. And each time, he came back, though usually missing several members of his band. On one such occasion, he came back with news of a strange type of plant they found in the Wastes. It was a cactus that grew like nothing anyone had ever seen before, in a strangely consistent swirling pattern. This later became known as Fractal Cacti, and would be used as both a weapon as well as an industrial resource.
Roughly a year ago, Emsky gathered a force of 50 mercenaries and ventured into the Wastes looking for another great discovery. Nobody has seen him since, though every-so-often a body of one of the mercenaries that traveled with him is found in the sands near the border of the Wastes, or in the stomach of one of the larger beasts.
