Emperor Zymond Rezian (a.k.a. The Old Emperor, The Evil One, The Curse)
Thankfully, Emperor Zymond is dead. His name is a curse on the lips of his people.
There hasn't been a moment without suffering since the "Old Emperor" (as he is known) ascended the throne in the year 1544. It's been over fifty years.
His cruelty was legendary. He hurt any who denied him the pettiest of his tyrannical fancies. He sent the Imperial legions into the countryside to enforce his will, and made sure the most depraved and wicked rose to the highest positions. He bought their loyalty with his vast treasury and let them do as they pleased as long as there was order in the Empire.
His cruelty was matched only by his lust for magic. He acquired every magic text in the entire Empire, and then when those ceased to satisfy him, he created entirely new arcane techniques. He founded a cabal of wizards, the Imperial Viziers, to further his research, then gave them Imperial citizens to experiment on. The secret of immortality was his loftiest dream. He believed the magic Thostyr Lake somehow held it, and had his ancestral palace moved to its shores and rebuilt stone by stone.
Some say the only soft spot in Zymond's wicked heart was for his daughter, Silai Rezian. The only smiles that ever crossed his lips occurred when he spoke about her. He kept her hidden away in his palace and didn't allow even his most trusted servants to look upon her.
The Old Emperor met his end in the Spring of 1596. He took a boat and a handful of Viziers out onto the lake one evening for magical research and experimentation. Suddenly, there was massive explosion. Those who saw the detonation said the green fireball was taller than the nearby palace. The blast was so mighty it smashed crockery in every village on the water and could be heard echoing off the mountain peaks. Zymond was gone.
When Zymond died, his corrupt empire fractured.
