Structure
The Empire was, until recently, ruled by an emperor. The emperor frequently left day-to-day decisions on matters of state to a sizable cabinet of viziers, who in turn largely left matters of state in the hands of regional governors selected for brutal efficiency and autonomy. With the throne empty, these vicious and headstrong governors are battling each other for control.
Culture
The Rezic Empire is too vast and encompasses too many different peoples to say it truly has just one culture.
When one talks about "Imperial culture," one generally refers to the trendy lifestyles of merchants and nobles in distant great cities. They are known for quick speaking and quicker spending, especially on the latest hairstyle or the most prestigious jeweler's craftsmanship. These trends rarely reach the remote Lake Province. The one exception is music; even in the worst times of the Old Emperor's reign, minstrels would bring the latest melodies to the Lake Province in the hope of gaining a wealthy or influential patron.

In the mists of antiquity, a hero named Reziah slew a despotic warlord and claimed his land with the support of a grateful populace. Generations later, one of Reziah's descendants conquered neighboring states in a series of bloody wars and crowned himself Emperor Rezian I.
The empire endured for just over 1,200 years. It has seen periods of prosperity and periods of desperation. It has weathered every hardship an uncaring world can devise.

On the Imperial Calendar, Year 0 is the year Rezian I declared himself to be emperor. Scholars estimate Reziah's kingdom was founded around three centuries earlier.
