Personal history

Felicien Targete was came of age in Chalmette, a city-state in Les Villas. Orphaned at a young age and living on the street, he learned to steal the food and resources needed for survival. He survived to become a young man by learning to combine his natural charisma with the uncaring logic of the streets.   While walking through a dark alleyway, Felicien fell unconscious and awoke in a strange netherworld of semi-perception. An entity spoke to him from the submerged void. Felicien was enticed to make a bargain: he would receive the eldritch power to exact his will, in exchange for a duty to serve his new patron and create a space for him to enter the material plane.   When Felicien awoke, he found himself in a new alleyway, in a new city. He had been transported hundreds of miles north to The Harlade Mountains, and among the strange foreigners who lived in its peaks. The entity in the void had kept his promise and bestowed him with a sorceric energy that he struggled to control.   The Harleans he now lived among had an affinity for locked doors which threatened to exceed his thieving skills, so he instead looked for work. The Huntsmen's guild was eager for new blood to service monster hunting contracts as The Harlade Confederation rapidly repopulated, following The Harlades Plague. Hunting monsters provided him both coin to feed his stomach and a reasonable excuse to practice and master his newfound power.   In the autumn of 550, he traveled to the Citadel in nearby Raviernruck to accept a werewolf hunting contract. He partied with a group of other huntsmen and descended into the valley town of Portage to hunt their quarry. Their pursuit unknowingly pulled the party into the mists which surrounded County Sigelruck, trapping them within its magics.   Felicien found that his connection to his patron had been severed along with his connection to the material plane. Concurrently, new voices began whispering to him in his dreams, offering him an even more enticing deal than he had previously made. After days of unproductive wandering about the valley, searching for a way out, he abandoned his huntsman-party and followed the call of the new voices.   The voices demanded that he burn the only winery in the valley to the ground, and he did. Then, the voices guided him to council with a nigh-elf named Kasimir and make pact with him, and he did. Pleased, the voices guided him to make his way to a sunken and frozen temple near the peak of Mount Ghakis. There, he learned the voices begat from shards of gods and powerful entities - ancient and dark - all trapped within vaults of amber.   He and Kasimir made new pacts with the dark powers, agreeing to become their avatars in exchange for the power to pursue their goals. Felicien became host to:

. The dark powers informed Felicien that Count Strahd was himself an aspect of one of their own - a powerful vampire-soul named Baans - and that it was his power which kept all of Sigelruck, including the other dark powers, confined to their own pocket-dimension. The powers directed Felicien to destroy Baans and allow them to escape to Cordeca, where they might impose their will upon a much greater stock of souls.   Within the temple, Felicien met again with the party of huntsmen he abandoned, as well as new allies: Gaston, a local barbarian; and Artyom Ivanov, a scholar from the Harlade Academy who had also become trapped in the valley. The party assured him that they were also there to carouse with the dark powers, but betrayed him when he turned his back to them. They slew him with powerful magics, but

restored him to an unlife. Intimidated by his power, the huntsmen fled. Yet Gaston remained, impressed by the gifts the dark powers had bestowed, and joined with Felicien.   As the huntsmen were retreating, Grimes strayed from the group and disturbed an amber golem guarding the temple from intruders. The golem slew him. Grimes' broken body was found by Felicien and Kasimir used his new power to raise him as an undead corpse. His body was then given to several other dark powers as a vessel they might control.   Felicien led his new party of aspects to destroy Count Strahd and Baans. He first traveled to the walled town of Krezk, slew all within, and raised them as an army of the undead. He then marched on the nearby Abbey of St. Markovia and pressed the dozens of Mongrelfolk within into service in his army.   Meanwhile, Count Strahd was informed of the Dark Powers' escape from their temple-prison and moved to rally his forces against them. The two armies met upon a battlefield surrounding the fortified manor Argynvostholt. The dark powers leveraged the beacon of Argynvostholt - recently relit by what remained of the party of huntsmen - to destroy Strahd's mortal form and force him back into the depths of Castle Ravenloft to regenerate.   Felicien pressed on to the town of Vallaki. Strahd himself had just drained the town of its capable men to muster them into his army, and there were none left to defend the Vallakian women and children. Felicien and the dark powers slaughtered them to the last. With his army now including all nearly all the men of Sigelruck, Felicien was ready to march on Castle Ravenloft itself and end Strahd permanently.   Before he could do so, the huntsmen - now lead by Ismark Kolyanovich - entered Castle Ravenloft and successfully killed Strahd before he could complete his resurrection. Upon arriving at Castle Ravenloft, Felicien found Baans dispatched and the castle in control of one of Strahd's concubines: a dusk-elf female named Patrina Velikovna. Pleading for his mercy, she offered to serve the dark powers willingly, in exchange for a position of power over men. Felicien accepted her deal, but first forced her to become the aspect of the final dark power in the amber temple.   With Strahd dead, the mists surrounding Sigelruck dissipated and the valley returned to the material plane. Felicien's army was free to begin carving his new domain from the Harlades.
