The Harlades Plague

The Harlade Plague is a unique type of magically-resistent plague which infected nearly all of the Harlade Confederation and many outlying communities in the 540s. Victims contract the plague by drinking contaminated water, contacted with diseased corpses, or sustained contact with a carrier. The plague is water-born.

Transmission & Vectors

Water-borne.

Causes

The Harlades Plague is a viral condition which infects its host via soft tissues in the nasal and pulmonary passages.   When exposed, the victim must succeed a DC 15 Constitution saving throw or become infected. Each day, the victim must repeat the save or progress along the disease progression schedule by one stage. Passing the save 3 times in a row will cure the disease.

Symptoms

Stage 1

The host is infected, but displays no outward symptoms. The infected can spread the disease to others through exchanging body fluids or sharing drinks.

Stage 2

The host begins sneezing and coughing. The infected can spread the disease through close proximity for more than an hour.

Stage 3

The host begins running a fever and suffers from exhaustion.   Exhaustion set at 3. (Dis. on saving throws, atk. rolls, and ability checks; speed halved). Damage strength 1d4 per day at or above this stage.

Stage 4

The host begins vomiting and suffers circulation loss to the extremeties - may loose finger- or toe-nails. Boils begin to form on the skin.   Damage Dexterity 1d4 per day at or above this stage. Damage Constitution 1d4 per day at or above this stage.

Stage 5

Boils turn to welts; infected becomes incapacitated; starts to bleed.   Exhaustion set at 5 (Speed = 0)

Stage 6

Death (no save).

Treatment

The plague is resistant to magical treatment. Magical healing from clerics below 5th level is ineffective, and curing a patient who is beyond the second stage is difficult even for experienced healers.   There is no known vaccine or natural treatment.

Prognosis

Nearly all those are infected with the plague and who do not express exception consistution are killed by it.

Prevention

Avoiding direct contact with infected persons is the most effective way to avoid the plague.   Magically purifying food and drink is effective at decontaminating water sources from the plague.
