Trouble in Miller's Bend

Sessions 1 - 3

Having been recently discharged from the Red Blade after years of service in the same unit, the party has decided to take on work as sellswords. Not knowing where to start looking, they inquire with Wrellen Demeirs who suggests that he might know of a job that suits them: the people of Miller's Bend have been troubled by a group of miscreants as of late and, while they aren't looking for a lethal solution, they want to get rid of the problem. Accepting the job, the party heads south to Miller's Bend to meet with their contact, Andrew Sandberg.   Arriving in Miller's Bend, the party finds that there is a small gang of troublemakers harassing the locals, pushing the envelope of bad behavior while either staying just barely on the fair side of the law, or bribing locals to keep quite when they push too far. Additionally, the only local law enforcement, a man named Travert, is too long in the tooth to be an effective deterrent to their activities, leaving the people with little recourse than to pay for outside help.   The party comes into conflict with the gang on several occasions before tracking them back to their camp and defeating them, discovering that they were involved in a smuggling operation of sorts, delivering weapons and armor to an unknown party outside of town. Unfortunately, the operation leader, a man named Verant, got wind of the party's presence in the area and left with some close associates before the camp was taken, thus avoiding capture and leaving the party without any new leads.   The party turns over the remaining members of the group to Travert, accepting a small reward from the people of Miller's Bend before heading back to Nettle Lake to celebrate their first successful mission as independent contractors.

Relations

Protagonists

Allies

  • Andrew Sandberg - Owner of the local tavern. He and his niece, Cindy, have had the most contact with the troublemakers thanks to their central location and ready source of alcohol.
  • Constable Travert - The aged watchman in charge of the local area. He has great knowledge of the area, but his fighting days are mostly behind him.

Adversaries

  • The miscreants - A band of young men, mostly merchants' sons, looking for some action outside of Nettle Lake. They follow Verant's orders despite not knowing the greater goals of their employer, just reveling in his support for their shameless activities.
  • Verant - Leader of the troublemakers in Miller's Bend. He is soft-spoken and takes care to keep his motives (and appearance) mostly concealed, but commands his subordinates with a strong presence.
