Hawthorne Cavalier

Hawthorne Cavalier

Hawthorne is a supporting character that is introduced later in the story.   As a fellow necromancer, Hawthorne wants to clear his reputation by proving his innocence to Clyde and swearing allegiance to Clyde's cause. He is the city authority's former forensic necromancer of the Terrahelm district. Currently, he is the author of The Red Teeth Chronicles.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Hawthorne grew up as a severely neglected and sheltered child due to his family lineage; his mother Ophelia Cavalier was a radical mage and sex worker who had a secret affair with Edmund Norcroft , the mayor of Copperwall. Because of this affair, Ophelia elected to keep Hawthorne's existence a secret in an effort to protect him. This lead to Hawthorne's downward mental spiral at an early age, and he eventually developed an obsession with death and the occult.   As a teenager, Hawthorne craved freedom and developed a habit of sneaking out and inadvertently causing trouble wherever he went. His obsession with the occult greatly concerned Ophelia, as she did not want him to become a mage. Despite her attempts as dissuading him, Hawthorne ended up going to college and studying necromancy in his later teen years.   After college, things started to look up for Hawthorne once he landed his first job as a forensic necromancer. He held that job for about two years until the mayor of Copperwall found out who he really was. Hawthorne's mother suddenly passed away one day, and while examining her body, Hawthorne was framed for a heinous crime and fired the same day. He was accused of defiling the body and didn't have a way to prove his innocence.   Hawthorne spiraled after this incident and left home to go hide out in The Trenches. He settled down in an abandoned funeral home he found down there, and after six years of living in isolation, he decided to pursue his main hobby and become an author. He published a fantasy series under a pen name and lives off royalties.

Sexuality

Despite Hawthorne's obsession with Claudine, he's shown interest in boys during his teen years. He considers himself bisexual with a preference for women.

Education

Hawthorne was home-schooled by his mother until he was eighteen. He had always aspired to go to Coppergate University , and after many successful attempts at sneaking himself in, he got caught after a month or so. Instead of doing jail time, the council took pity on his living situation and decided to let him attend the university in exchange for community service. Hawthorne took this opportunity to learn what he could, and unfortunately didn't make the best grades. He graduated with the bare minimum amount of passing grades. Someday, however, he plans to go back and learn psychology. Though his general education was a failure on his part, he excelled in the subjects of healing magic, history, and forbidden arts.

Employment

Hawthorne's one and only job was a Junior Necromancer at the age of twenty-two. He worked for the Copperwall City Authority and helped solve crimes using his newfound powers. Since he failed his anatomy and biology courses, he wasn't allowed to do the forensic aspect of it, and had to be supervised by a member of the CCA's Occult Division.   He is currently a freelance writer and has a few books published. His main source of income is from book royalties.

Mental Trauma

Due to his childhood, Hawthorne has always struggled with setting and recognizing personal boundaries.

Social

Hobbies & Pets

Hawthorne enjoys writing poetry and prose. He is a lover of all art forms and enjoys analyzing Clyde's paintings.   While not technically a pet, Hawthorne has a cat skeleton in his house and treats it as if it were alive. He does not have the power to bring the cat back to life, as it is too far decayed for the ritual to work. However, he is perfectly capable of finding a living cat as a pet.

Speech

Hawthorne has a slight Irish accent and his tone of voice is generally low and monotone, unless he is speaking with someone he admires. With Claudine, his tone appears softer and he tends to speak with honeyed words. With Clyde, his tone is slightly less warm and he speaks with more emotion.   Despite his mood, Hawthorne rarely yells or swears in public. In private, he swears often but still rarely raises his voice. The only exception to his volume is when he needs to get someone's attention or call out to someone from a distance.

History

Hawthorne has been infatuated with Claudine since they were teenagers. While the two never spoke or officially met until late adulthood, Hawthorne has kept an eye on Claudine for years. As a young adult, he engaged in stalker-like behavior by following her from a distance, watching her around town, and collecting her misplaced things to build a shrine. His mother eventually found out, punished him for it, and explained to him why it was inappropriate. Since then, he's changed his behavior toward Claudine but still feels infatuated and even a bit obsessed with her.

History

While they never knew each other growing up, Hawthorne has always held a deep respect for Clyde's pacifist nature.
Given Hawthorne's reputation, Clyde immediately distrusted him upon their first introduction. Hawthorne came off as a creep, but eventually proved to be a dedicated ally towards Clyde and Claudine. It took quite a while for Hawthorne to open up about his past, and likewise, it took a long time for Clyde to stop thinking of Hawthorne as a threat.   Because Hawthorne and Clyde both suffer from severe depression, they learned to understand each other by recognizing pattern behaviors that they both exhibit during depressive episodes. In turn, Hawthorne and Clyde learned each other's individual traumas and built a friendship based on mutual support. Clyde was Hawthorne's first real friend, and this lead to Hawthorne's desire to continue living and seek mental help.

History

While Hawthorne has always known who his father is, Edmund only recently found out Hawthorne was his son. The two have always despised each other due to their individual reputation. Edmund has always had a reputation for being a corrupt leader, while Hawthorne's reputation is a direct result of Edward's corruption. The two frequently denounce each other, both publicly and privately.   Shortly before his death, Edmund revealed that he secretly admires Hawthorne's courage, determination, and loyalty to his friends.
