The Red Teeth Chronicles

The Red Teeth Chronicles is a fantasy series within the Copperwall universe, written by Hawthorne Cavalier and published under the pen name Elias Black. It follows an immortal vampire navigating a political landscape in which people are judged by the color of their teeth.   In the series, vampires are known as 'red teeth', while lower class humans are 'yellow teeth' and upper class humans are 'white teeth'. There is a race of undead humans known as 'black teeth', and though vampires are unaffected by them, the black teeth serve as environmental conflict for the non-vampire characters. Hawthorne explores many themes of systematic oppression and poverty in his writings, reflecting his early childhood experiences in Old Canthain. There are also themes of sexual expression among the characters, which directly reflects Hawthorne's desire to be intimate with men and his former promiscuity with both sexes.   Hawthorne's characters directly reflect himself and the people he grew up around, including Clyde Martin and Claudine Martin. He included a romance arc between two characters, which is Hawthorne's way of expressing his desire and longing to be with Claudine. Unfortunately, Claudine doesn't know that Hawthorne wrote the book and therefore doesn't see the connection.   As of the start of the story, Hawthorne has three books in the Red Teeth Chronicles published and is currently working on a fourth. The series has been well-received by younger audiences (teens and young adults) despite its explicit themes. Despite its negative reputation, the series is currently rising in popularity. Hawthorne, on average, makes a modest amount of royalties per month and can live comfortable; he sometimes suffers from massive drops in sales whenever a member of the clergy publicly denounces the series.
