Kingdom of Dragoncrest

The Kingdom of Dragoncrest was a Crusader State created after the First Crusade by the Knights of St. Ascus. It was carved out of the Tamayan Sultanate by the crusaders who launched a holy assault to reclaim the region for the Macard faith.

Culture

The Kingdom of Dragoncrest is largely composed of soldiers who settled the land after the assault against the native Tamayans living there. They are led by knightly orders who are devoted to the Macardian See. The Dragoncrestians thus are very devout, and also incredibly xenophobic against any other religions in the region. The population is also largely humans, as with most of Faraway.   The most powerful of the knightly orders in control is the Knights of St. Ascus, who are a war-loving sect of the Macardian faith. They bear the banner of the hydra. They tend to enjoy dueling and openly will fight each other over disputes. Not all the knightly orders are like this. King Niklas, for example, was part of the Order of St. Perrenet, believing in the ideas of chivalry and honesty above all things.

History

Background

In the year 4300, the Madeci Empire lost the region of Northern Dragoncrest to the Tamayas during a border dispute. The war gave the Tamayans access to the Sea of Dragoncrest and to become an economic rival to the Tallian and Madeci peoples. The Tamayans did not follow the Macardian faith, instead putting their trust in the dragon god Bahamut.   By 4440, the Tamayans began to persecute and bully Madeci and Tallian Macard pilgrims and preachers within the region, as they felt they were stirring up trouble to try and usurp their caliph. From this harassment, however, the Macardian See saw it as an assault on their faith. With the backing of the Sister Queens Maria and Sofia of Tallia, as well as the Madecian Emperor, the Macard nations of the coast gathered arms and marched toward the northwestern coast of Dragoncrest. The Macardian See sent the Sultan of Tamay a declaration of holy crusade.

The First Crusade

Niklas by Paradox Entertainment
Prince Niklas of the Madeci led the crusade in his mid-20's, inspiring the Crusaders through both his youth and zealotry.
The assault began in the year 4441. The Madeci were led by Prince Niklas, the nephew of the Madecian Emperor, as well as Emperor Basilus himself. The Sultan, Ras-Dal Saldin, led the Tamayan clans against the Crusaders. In the Battle of Karkdun, Emperor Basilus was slain, and his only daughter became the Empress of Madeci. Yet the crusaders rallied under the effort of Prince Niklas, who besieged the fortress of Mial. Prince Niklas then dealt a stunning blow to Ras-Dal, crossing over the mountains and raiding the outskirts of the capitol, Tamay.   The next year, the Tamayans counter-attacked and pushed the crusaders over the river into the heat of the desert. The crusaders retreated, but held up fort in Mial and Karkdun. The crusaders slaughtered any resistance to their occupation, and took hostages of Tamayan nobility. The Sultan was forced to surrender. The Crusaders were granted the region of northern Dragoncrest. For his efforts, the Macardian See rewarded Prince Niklas the title of King of Dragoncrest.

Aftermath

The Crusaders continued to purge any non-Macards in the region, setting up a knightly order dedicated to St. Ascus, which served as the rulers of the region led by their king, Niklas.
