Halflings

The Halflings , or the Biarn in their tongue, are a group of humanoids hailing from the eastern regions of Gothai. They are called "Halflings" due to looking just like men, but standing about half the height of them.

Basic Information

Biological Traits

Halflings have the same biological features as humans, though morphically their heads are a bit bigger than some of their body, nearly like how human children look proportionally. They are not immensely hairy, it becoming rare when the male grows a mustache and beard (otherwise it is usually only sideburns). The only hairy parts of their body appear to be the top of their feet.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Being homely and kind, the Halflings often reserve themselves to enjoying good food and drink, as well as painting, singing, and performing fine art. In fact, many lack the adventurous spirit because they often have it nice. However, because there are forces in the world which seek to strip the Halflings of their well-being, some forgo the life of comfort and become adventurers because of this.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Halflings rarely ever travel, enjoying their tightly-knit communities within the region of Halfia. Those who do travel, however, will be found primarily in highly populated areas or small towns. It is rare to find a halfling who enjoys being away from civilization. Only the bravest of their folk will dare travel in adventuring parties.

Civilization and Culture

Common Dress Code

Halflings dress modestly. The men tend to wear even a work shirt when out on the fields despite not needing it. The women do much the same. To a halfling, appearance is utterly important.

Culture and Cultural Heritage

Halflings are often very materialist in their lifestyles, and do not enjoy when their way of life is disturbed. But this does not mean all of them are evil; on the contrary, their love of tradition means they hate seeing people becoming oppressed. In this sense, many of the other races often view them as if they have the mindset of children through their lives.

History

The Halflings find themselves to not be much of a storied people. After being formed by the god Leginlog, they just settled in the region of Halfia and minded their own business. It was when monsters, such as orcs, began to raid their tribes that the Halflings finally decided they needed swords and weapons. They allied with the Mountain Dwarves (some even intermingling) who gave them armor and weapons to defend their lands. However, only few warriors would actually defend their villages.   This did start a tradition within the Halfling lands, however. Often they would elect warriors to go and fight for them, souls whom they deemed braver than most. As such, though most halflings would rather stay home in peace and quiet, there has been a legacy of many heroic halflings becoming brave warriors.   Though the humans of Gothai have largely declared themselves the rulers of the land, the Halflings have paid little attention to human politics, only swearing fealty for their safety, but otherwise just being content with the state of things.
