Chapter 12 - Battle of the Mages

General Summary

With the reforging of Pendragon, the adventurers were given a message through Nilrem. The arch-mage of Cemedri Magicus, Odmund, sent an urgent message on the presence of Gromherjek at the college and how they were holding back other dragons. The party took a rest, and then teleported to the mage college of Cemedri Magicus, with Ardor Pelota, the former student there, leading them through the halls.   They looked down the halls and saw dead students. There was signs of struggles. The party guessed that abishais were being used once again here, and proceeded with caution. Coming up to the top floor of the university, the party witnessed Morgainne with a group of Dragon Knights, as well as the abishai Qenlynn, all there and ready for them. There was no speaking; the battle commenced, with Ardor sending a fire ball against the knights, Morgainne, and Qenlynn due to his fast reflexes.   Morgainne used her enchanting magic to cast the spell Feeble Mind on Ardor, to keep him out of the fight for a while, while Eogun and Uhtric charged the dragon knights down the halls. Qenlynn inspired her allies with a war cry, proclaiming that they would bring glory to Tiamat. In the midst of the skirmish, Nilrem restored the enfeebled Ardor so they could both continue to fight off the mages. Uhtric used the restored Pendragon to cut down many of the knights, and the fight was looking to be winning early.   Yet in the midst of the fight, Morgainne used her enchanting magic to take control over Eogun in his enlarged state, forcing him to attack Caoimhe with his powerful axe. Caoimhe responded by blasting the enchantress with the spell Blight, wounding her and forcing her out of concentration over Eogun so he would not remain under Morgainne's control. Ardor then summoned a Fire Elemental to chase around the enchantress, but Qenlynn jumped in to try and distract him by hammering on him with her flail and claws.   Morgainne fended off the Fire Elemental, using a shield spell to protect herself from the elemental's fiery fists. In the meantime John ran around the battle trying to stab his foes but failing against their plate armor. It was not his best hour. Nilrem then turned into a Mammoth to attack some of the knights and provide himself as a meat-shield against the knights. The knights were slowly whittled by Nilrem's tusk attacks and the efforts of Uhtric and Eogun engaging in their melee duels.   Finally, Ardor found an opening after the enchantress cast a counterspell to protect herself from one of Caoimhe's spells. Ardor bursted with energy, shooting a barrage of magic missiles at Morgainne before she could react. The magic missiles acted as a barrage against her, and killed the enchantress. Qenlynn ordered the knights to attack Ardor and went around the battlefield to deal with the druids. But Uhtric and Eogun defeated the knights, and soon Uhtric cornered Qenlynn.   With a mighty blow, Uhtric smote the abishai with Pendragon. Before Qenlynn's eyes flashed the blade Dragonbane from a thousand years in the future, used by the warrior Wulfric. Thousands of years of servitude flashed before her eyes, including the judging eyes of Tiamat. The abishai Qenlynn cowered as Uhtric raised his blade again, and cried out, "Tiamat, why have you abandoned me?!" The sword of Pendragon stabbed Qenlynn, and she collapsed onto the ground, reverting to her old human self.
Thus ended Qenlynn, the scourge of Albion for a thousand years in backward time. Once apprentice of the greatest wizards of Cemedri Magicus and near destroyer of the lands of Lysandus with a dragon's ferocity. In her attempt to destroy Lysandus' founder, Fate once again played her hand against Qenlynn, and slew her once and for all.
With the death of Morgainne and Qenlynn, the adventurers knew there was one final threat to face: Gromherjek Kin-Eater, the dragon who caused this entire mess. First, they saw Vice-Mage Maro Sadano and Arch-Mage Odmund holding back groups of adult dragons. They asked the party to hurry, for they could not keep them back forever. The adventurers hurried up to the summit of Mt. Magus, where they saw the dragon Gromherjek in the sky, flying above the lava.   There was little said between the adventurers and the dragon. Though the adventurers pointed out Gromherjek's hypocrisy of eating his brother despite lamenting the loss of his wife and children. Then, the dragon proclaimed his last declaration.
“So, ye have finally arrived with that dreadful blade of doom. I do not fear it, Uhtric. I fear no mortal. I shall feast upon all your bones when I am finished, my first feast when I become the uncontested King of Albion. Now, mortals, draw steel and flame. I do not fear you!”
