Sorah is an important protagonist who will join Melwyn as he embarqs on his travels throughout Arros in search of a cure for his condition during book 2 and 3 of the Chronicles of Hysal series.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Sorah is a 17, almost 18 years old Kavasian young man. He is of average height for his age and has a slightly above average built. Despite not looking too impressive physicaly, Sorah is strong, athletic, and highly trained in armed combat and easily able to overpower physicaly stronger opponents.

Identifying Characteristics

Tattoo

On his 16th birthday, Sorah was given a tattoo which symbolised him becoming a fully fledged member of the Black Daggers Guild. It also signified that he had finaly completed the decade-long training and that he was now a fully trained assassin. The tattoo itself covers a small area on his inner wrist, marks him as a member of the Black daggers. While most other Mercenary Guilds in Arros also have tattoos to identify their members, the black daggers are one of the most famous across not only Arros, but also Enaskia. This means that in order to stay undercover and not get outed, he must constantly hide it. When out as a normal civilian, he simply wears long sleeves or bands on his wrists to hide it. His work outfit includes long arms guard, completly covers the tattoo.

Ears

Being an almost adult aged Elemental Mages, Sorah's ears have reached about half of their total future lenght, making them appear noticably not of a typical human shape, giving away the fact that he is a mage.

Eyes

While Sorah's old Hazel to light brown eye colour is still noticable, his eyes have in recent years rapidaly started shifting towards a more amber coloured tint.

Special abilities

Sorah is a Lightmage, which means that he has the ability to create, absorb and manipulate light in various ways. He can even make it take on a solid form and summon lightning, although both of these things take a lot of mana out of him. Most importantly, he can not only manipulate light at its source, but also light that is reflected, including onto himself. This means that he can turn himself, and any object he's holding or touching completly invisible. While partial invisibily isn't an uncommon skill, complete invisibility is a very rarery perfected, especialy at such a young age, like Sorah. Fortunatly for him, his training to become an assassin meant he had plenty of opportunity to perfect this ability to a lethal degree.

Apparel & Accessories

Sorah possesses numerous daggers and knives, some of which were gifted to him by the guild, while others he bought with the money he earned from completing missions. His most prized possession however, is a Vrahlian Steel dagger, which was given to him by the Black dagger's Headmaster as a gift for completing his first mission.

Personal history

Childhood

Sorah was born in the City of Larasor, in december of the year 352 to a poor family of blacksmiths where he was the oldest of 3 siblings. When he was 2, his younger brother was born, and at 4, it was his younger sister that was born. At 6 years old, his Lightmage powers began to really manifest themselves. Seeing this, his mother, now single and struggling to meet ends meet, took interest to it. She seized on the opportunity when a mysterious recruiter working for the Black Daggers approched her about Sorah. Despite his vehement objections, he was sold to the guild for 325 gold ducats, which was enough for his mom and siblings to live confortably with for about 5 years.

His true Home

In march of 359, Sorah was brought by the recruiter to the headquarters of the Black Daggers Guild, located in the City of Taralan. There, after a short ceremony, he was officialy admitted into the organisation. He was then admitted into the Larasor branch of the Organisation, located in the City of Larasor. Starting at around 7 years old and lasting until 12, he began a brutal training regiment that got worse as he aged. He had to train his magic for hours everyday, as well as train with daggers, including the Vrahlian Steel dagger, which the guild is named after. Throughout those years, his resentement towards his mother grew exponentialy. At the same time, the fear he had innitialy felt becoming part of the guild was slowly replaced by a genuine sense of belonging. Despite the hardships of his training and the fierce competition between his colleagues, he eventualy started to see them as a second family and the guild itself as his true home.

Blanking

Minor Spoilers

During training, Sorah and the other assassin aprentis regularly blanked-out during training. The kids secretly blamed their master's assistant, who was a Soulweaver, and their master confirmed their suspitions, before saying that whatever they learned, they did not need to know, but their minds already did. To this day, he and his colleagues have no idea what actualy happened in those moments.

First mission

Major Spoilers

On june 9th, 366, at 13 years old, Sorah carried out his assassination mission in the City of Casqal, and he carried out the hit without a hitch. The target was a slave trader who had escaped the law by bribing the city guard and some in government. The slave trader had become indepted to the soldiers, who later hired the Black Daggers Guild to quietly kill him so they wouldn't be punished for accepting his bribes.

Unresolved conflicts and volatile lies

A few weeks after completing his mission, Sorah was allowed to travel back to Larasor so he could briefly visit his family, which he had been forbiden to do so for the past 7 years. However, his mother had passed away from sickness the year before, so he unfortunatly never got any type of resolution with her. The reunion with his brother and sister, who now lived with one of their mother's friends, was awkard. He quickly realised that their mom hadn't told them exactly what kind of guild she had sent him too. So, he instead decided to keep it a secret and lied to them, saying that he was just a simple mercenary, like many other Elemental Mages they knew where. In the next few years, Sorah would only see them sporadicaly, and everytime, he felt bad that he had to lie to them to keep up the secret.

A chance encounter

In october 367, during a visit to his sibling's house, he stumbled upon his cousin Akaela and his aunt, her mother Desana. Sorah had met both of them before, only a few months before he had been sent to the guild. Him and Akaela quickly redeveloped a friendship and Desana proposed he comes visits them in Sargassin, and after getting approbation from his guild, accepted. The visit lasted a week, and Sorah greatly enjoyed his time there, even if he had to avoid talking about his work, or had to lie about it.

Graduation

A year after this, in December 368, Sorah finished all of his mandated training and officialy became a professional assassin. He received his tattoo during a somber ceremony attended by all of his fellow students and the headmaster of the local guild chapter, who explained to him that while he was now free to go live were he so wished, he would still need to come back here, in Larasor every few months, where he would be assigned his next missions. After much consideration, Sorah decided to go live in the City of Sargassin, in the Kingdom of Gysia, since he felt that being in another country and further away from Larasor would allow him to start fresh, so to speak.

A fresh start?

Starting in January 359, and up to this day, Sorah spends about two thirds of his time in Sargassin. There, he lives in a small room, above Desana's restaurant. He does have to leave every 3 months or so and travel to Larasor to take on one or more missions, which he usualy is able to carry out in a few weeks. However, when in Larasor, he always makes sure to go see his brother and sister for a day or two before setting off.

Motivation

Sorah's current main motivation is simply to continue working for the Black Daggers. He plans to continue accepting and carrying out missions for the next few years, get payed for them, and save some of that money for his eventual retirement. In the meantime, he also gives out a portion of his pay to both Desana and Akaela to support their restaurant, and also to his brother and sister in Larasor, which helps them greatly as well.

Religious Views

Sorah is a ardent believer in Choranism, and practices the religious rites without fault. He goes to a Suriat Temples every month and does his 3 daily prayer, as ordained in the The Bekura. Murder of innocents is forbiden in Choranism, so he knows that there's a chance that his work as an assassin may puts in peril his eventual ascension, so he assumes that he must work hard and follow the rukes digilently to repent in case he ever kills someone who's innocent in the eyes of Halin.

Speech

Sorah's mother tongue is Kavasian, but in his years living at the guild, he was also taught to speak, read, and write in both Esnian, and also Gysian. He also knows how to say a few words in the Larasori dialect of Hazian; a language common of south-central arros and the Royn river valley, but he cannot read or write in it. He speaks with a slight accent when talking in both Gysian and Esnian.
