Continent of Enaskia

While Enaskia is a smaller continent compared to most of its neighbours, it is perhaps the landmass with the richest history in the world as well as being the home of some of the most influencial cultures and country either in history or in the present. The continent, specificaly the Nyos river valley, is theorised to be the birthplace of human civilisation.

Geography

From the outside, Enaskia is generaly divided into three broad regions: The North, The East, and the South.

The North: The northern half of Enask begins at the southern end of the Syrkanian mountains, through the Darnian marches and along the northern flanks of the Kheros Mountains. Most of the region is dominated by the flat and fertile orromian plains and the mountainious Salsian highland regions, but also contains the salty marshes of the Great Lorasi, the dry coastal region of Syrkania as well as the forested valleys of Old Jasua. It also includes the massive island of Lassin in the north and many other.

The East: This region of Enask is located to the east of the Tarakom and Kheros mountains and along the coast of the Mahadorian Ocean. It is the smallest of the three regions, but is the most populated and the most urbanised. The region is mostly formed of coastal plains, peninsulas and sea-side cliffs. Many islands are located in the nearby seas and bays.

The South: The largest of the three region is also the least populated. It is dominated by the Darnian Desert, which occupies most of the region, from the Nharish highlands in the south-west and the Lasris mountains in the north-east. It is separated from the north by the Darnian Marches and the Kheros mountains in the north, and the Tarakom mountains and the Ruby sea in the east. this region also contains a few islands, mainly in the west, with the largest of them being the Island of Sarsan.

Localized Phenomena

Red storms

Red Storms are a particulary virulent type of dust storms that is somewhat unique to the continent. It originates in the western half of the great Darnian desert and happens about once every decade when the dominant winds over the continent change direction.

Climate

The North: The northern half of Enaskia is a wet, temperate region, covered in fertile plains, rivers, forests and low-lands. The north-western coast, near the Sea of Nabar, is one of the wettest region on the planet, near constantly shrouded by dense clouds that bring heavy rains and strong winds. In contrast, the Darnian marches and the southern Orromian plains are dry and hot. Freezing temperatures and snowfall is common in the salsian highlands during winter and rare but not impossible in the Syrkan hills.

The Eastern coast: Unlike the northern and the southern half of the continent, the eastern coast overall has a more temperate climate. The Asylian plains are temperate and less rainy than the Orromian plains west of the Kheros mountains, while the cedar coast to the south is dryer, but receives much more rain than the Darnian marches to the west. Hoxania is the southern most portion of the Eastern coast. It is a semi-desertic region that acts like a transition zone between the Cedar coast and the Darnian desert.

The South: The south, being dominated by the Great Darnian Desert, has a largely desertic climate, with little to no rain, and constant heat, during most of the year, especialy in the south. The only large source of water in the region is the Nyos river, which creates a micro-climate along it and around its delta. It is populated with the vast majority of plants and animals of the entire region.

History

Before History:

Enaskia was perhaps one of the first continent to be settled by humans. They came from the south, from the land of Samara and Mahador and settled in southern Enask. A second wave of humans came later and pushed the first vave to the north. These became the orromians, while the second group became the Darnians. Both of these groups were nomads, but the harsh conditions of the Darnian desert forced the Darnians to start settling along the Nyos river and built the first cities on the continent, Hurys being the oldest one that is still standing today.

First Age:

The First Age began in Enaskia when numerous city-states along the Nyos river were unified into a single kingdom, Darnia, with Hurys as its capital. Many of the orromian tribes in the north began establishing small cheifdoms and organise into larger tribes that frequenly raided northern darnia. The Kingdom of Syrkania, the Nakish tribes and later the mighty Khartian Empire took turns invading and occupying Darnia, and in the case of the Khartians, go even beyond, establishing colonies in the eastern coast and in Arros and Mahador. Contact between Enaskia and Osian was established for the first time by the Taonese Empire and the Khartian Empire. A few decades later, the Age was cut short by the Long winter.

Long Winter and Age of Migration:

The First Age ended abruptly in Enaskia as with everywhere else in the world. Most civillisations on the continent collapsed in the first 10 years of the centuries long ice-age. Society regressed back into a nomad lifestyle and slowly began migrating in and out of the continent. Essanians and Kinvalians came to Enask from Osian in the west, pushing groups of Orromians east, into Arros. Other Orromian groups travelled south, fleeing the now harsh winters of the north, and settled in Kherokomia, Asylia and the cedar coast.

Second Age (1st Half):

The second age in Enask begins when Darnia finaly reunifies itself. After a few centuries, the kingdom becomes the undisputed super-power of the continent. However, it wouldn't last. To the north at the same time, wars between the Orromian kingdom of Thenia, and the new Kinvalian kingdom sees the later be victorious. They expand rapidaly and soon come into contact with Darnia. A series of 5 devastating wars occur between the two of them, draning their ressources and often dragging other countries on the continent into the conflict. Finaly, the true winner of these wars were the Essanians, who took a long time uniying the island of Lassin, where they had settled, into a single kingdom. Soon after, they made war against a severely weakened Kinvalia, which quickly collapsed after their capital was sacked.

Second Age (2nd Half):

The Essanian Empire quickly occupied most of Northern Enaskia and then beyond, invading the kingdom of Asylia and Syrkania in quick succession. They then attempted, and failed, numeros times to invade Darnia, until finaly they did it, about 700 years ago, which effectively unified the entire continent under their rule. It wouldn't last however, as their harsh religious and magic policies provocked the rise of many opposition groups, most famously the cult of sokral, which made the state increasingly unstable. In the previous centuries, it had also expanded into neighbouring arros, but a rising power by the name of the Carathengian empire rallied the other independant Arrosian states in a grand coalition against them. The Essanian empire might have been able to deal with both the internal instability and the Arrosian war if it wasn't for a third, much bigger problem. The blight.

Age of Chaos:

Because of the gigantic war in Arros, most imperial legions had been shipped there, leaving Enaskia relatively defenceless. At the same time, the blight began rapidaly spreading in cities in the west, particulary in Syrkania and Thenia. This lead to revolts which spread out of control, fueled by fear of the blight and the long seething anger towards the Imperial autority. The Eastern Half of the Empire collasped into a chaotic blaze. Darnia had become independant soon before and now lead the charge against the empire's remains, but the coalition rapidly fell appart as the blight spread all over the continent. Mages and human soldiers who had once been on opposite sides of various battlefields allied and battled against the blight monsters, eventualy eliminating them all.

Third Age:

The newly formed countries spent most of the third age fighting each other, and peace was only recently established. The mages that unified themselves to fight the blight remained together and settled in Kherokomia, which had been left empty and devastated following the wars and plagues. Darnia reestablished itself as the dominant power on the continent, but their historical rivalry with the Kinvalian kingdom continues as the country is now part of a large union, together with the Kingdom of Asylia and the kingdom of Paxolia, in Arros. Tensions are high, but war hasn't broken out yet. As for the Essanians, they were pushed back to their island, and become very isolationist. The continent is also now less connected with Arros since the fall of the Empire, but many cultural and economical links still exist.

Was this made using the WA default mapmaker or a different program? I like maps and I sadly missed out on this year's challenge. My space viking planet doesn't really have continents, mostly specific biomes, and I'd like to paint it out but its another thing on my to-do list.

If you mean the banner image, which is also the base image for the map on the top right, then no. It was made using Inkarnate. The rest(pins, labels and lines) were made on world Anvil. Hope this helps and thank you for the like!

ok. I just wasn't sure which program was used. I think that's the one that requires a membership I forget. I have some mapmakers wishlisted on steam but some aren't even available yet or are in early access and finances are so thin I usually just make something from scratch.

Inkarnate doesn't require a membership/subscription to use, but you get more features if you pay (kinda like World Anvil) Whatever you choose to do, good luck!
