Red Storms

A meteorological phenomenon that brings rain to the deserts and sandstorms to fertile plains.

How it starts

Every 7 to 10 years, during the spring, the dominant winds over Darnia that generally blow from the north to the south, change direction, bringing vast amounts of sand, dust and red skies over the northern half of Enaksia and even Western Arros, while bringing much needed rains in south-western Darnia and Sarkania. A month or two before the winds decide to change direction, they will cease blowing from the north and the area around western Darnia will become windless. Then, around April, the wind begins to blow again, but this time towards the north.

Sandstorms in Northern Enaksia

The wind brings copious amounts of red dust and sand from the Darnian deserts and hills. This red wind as its locally called blows over the Sarkanian hills before spreading over the orromian plains of Central Enaskia and reach as far north as the Salsian highlands before curving to the east and reaching western Arros, with red skies seen as far west as Larasor, before the wind turns south again and blows over the northern Mahadorian coast as it fizzles out.

Rainstorms in the desert

While in the north, the air is getting chocked with red dust, in the south, the winds blowing over the Darnian sea to towards the north fill up with humidity and once they pass over the desert and reach the Sarkanian hills, they dump all that humidity is the form of much needed rain and even snow in the most elevated regions. Because of the dust, the rain is usually rust coloured, hence the name. Once the region is thoroughly soaked, the dust can only blow from further south, where it is still dry and the phenomena therefore loses much of its steam. By September, the Darnian sands have ended and won't be back for around a decade.

Beneficial Weather event

While sandstorms and rainstorms may seem like bad thing, and they generally are, for the concerned regions they are a blessing. The Orromian plains are a very fertile, low lying plain criss-crossed with numerous rivers. Agriculture is very important here, but the soils can be depleted of essentially minerals if not replenished. The sandstorms are the solutions. They coat the region in red dust that is then soaked through the ground with the rain, replenishing the ground with essential minerals. Likewise, the rainstorms over the Sarkanian hills are beneficial to a region which only receives marginal precipitation during a normal year and is constantly tittering on the brink of drought.

Localization

While the phenomena can be felt in a vast region, going from Southern Darnia, all the way to central Arros and northern Mahador., it is way more impactful in Enaskia than anywhere else, particularly in the Sarkanian hills, the Darnian Marches and the Orromian plains of Enaksia.
