Kingdom of Gysia (GEE-ZIA)

The Kingdom of Gysia is a large, powerful and militaristic state situated on the south-west of the continent of Arros, on a large peninsula, which gave it its name. It is currently locked in a cold war of sorts with the Kavasian Empire and the Kingdom of North-Shorai.

History

Origins

The Gysian peninsula was first inhabited by Orromian gysians migrating from Paxolia to the north, then by Hazian colonialists during the Second age, which eventualy formed the first Gysian Kingdom. However, this kingdom was then invaded by the rapidly expanding Essanian Empire and made into a province.

Essanian Rule

During the Imperial Era, as its called in former territories under the Essanian empire, the population grew a lot and its culture cemented, becoming a blend of local and Essanian culture. Unlike in other provinces, the gysians managed to keep their culture from being entirely replaced by the Essanian one and this was in large part due to their religion, which was Solianism, while most of the Empire practiced Choranism.

Getting back independance

Together with Shorai, Gysia was one of the last regions that remained under imperial control, right up until the start of the third age. In fact, Tareghasi was the last city in Arros under imperial control before the Eastern Essanian Empire was finaly defeated by a Kavasian army. Since then, the kings of Gysia that came and went add to their tittle of king of Gysia, the title of Emperor of the East, which was the title given to the co-emperor who ruled the Eastern Half of the Essanian empire.

Consolidation and Expansion

Most of Gysia's Hostory since the fall has been dominated by the consolidation of the kingdom in its ancestral lands on the peninsula, followed by agressive attempts at expanding north and east, with little success, until recently, where they managed to subjugate most of Shorai during their Conquest of the country.

Demography and Population

Core regions/Gysian Peninsula

The vast majority of the population living on the peninsula are of Gysian origins. Around two thirds of the country's population lives in the region. Very few mages are to be found here, except for the capital, which contains 3 different guild halls, which are closely related to the ones in Vrahlis and Arbiro.

Northern and Eastern Regions

The recently conquered regions of Shorai, refered to as south-shorai are inhabited by Shoranians, who speak Shorani and follow choranism. A similar scenario occurs in the north-east, near the Sanat river where most of the population are of Morattian origin. They dont natively speak Gysian and are mostly of the Choranian fate, instead of Solianism. Further south, the Gysians also own a majority Hazian territory around the City of Casqal. Unlike the previous two regions, this area is largely assimilated, though the hazian tongue is still spoken by a large amount of people, maily outside Casqal. They are of the Solian fate, which facilitated their integration.

Territories

The Gysian peninsula makes up the core of the country but its borders extend beyond. They control what used to be the southern half of the kingdom of Shorai as well as the western half of the Morratian marches, up to the Sanat river. Much of the north-easetrn border is contested by North-Shorai, whos soldiers regulary launch raids against the occupying forces.

Military

Infantry

The kingdom of Gysia has the third largest land army in Arros, after the Kavasian Empire and the Kingdom of Paxolia, which is part of the The Commonwealth. However, they also heavely employ the services of Calexi Mercenary.

Navy

Since Gysia is mainly situated on a peninsula, they have a lot of coastline to protect. Because of this, they also have a large navy, only surpassed by the Arbitian Mercantile republic and the Kingdom of Nhaggoria. The Gysian navy is mainly focused in and around the Toren sea, and is posted at the City of Tareghasi, situated up the Tares river, in central Gysia.

Air Force

The kingdom also has a large number of Winged ships, but most of them aren't made for warfare, but instead for civilian passengers and commercial usage. Nonetheless, they can still do reconnaissance missions along the borders of Gysia in order to spot any upcoming invasion.

Mercenaries

Recently, the king has started to emply the services of the The Shield of Saol, despite its controversial history. Their members can be seen sometimes patroling the cities of the kingdom, acting as guards and peace keepers.

Religion

Solianism is the faith practiced by most of the population in Gysia. The capital Gys, has a large Solian temple, which is the second oldest Solian temple in Arros. However, in the north, Choranism is far more common. Even in City of Sargassin, a city on the west coast of the peninsula, historicaly somewhat isolated from the rest of Gysia, has a large population of Chorani Gysians and some of the oldest Choranian temples on the continent have been built here more than a thousand years ago.

Foreign Relations

Allied nations

The kingdom of Gysia maintains good relations with both the Kingdom of Nhaggoria and the Kingdom of Darnia, with whom they share a fate, Solianism. Historicaly, Gysia had always being closer to Darnia, but since the The Conquest of Shorai, they now seeks the aid of Nhaggoria in a future conflict with the Kavasian Empire, which they have yet to accept, as their king is more preoccupied with a brewing rebellion on the Vechor Islands.

Enemy Nations

While the kingdom of North-Shorai presents the most immediate threat to the stability of Gysia, as they regulary launch raids into the kingdom, the Kavasian Empire is by far and away Gysia's worst foe. Just 3 years ago, war almost broke out between the two over Gysia's invasion of Shorai, which was and still is, allied to Kavasia.

Neutral Nations

Both the The Kinvalian-Paxolian commonwealth and the Merchant Republic of Arba have invested interests in the conflict opposing Gysia and Kavasia. The commonwealth can be considered to be in favor of Kavasia, but this sentiment is largely limited to Paxolia, who's nobility had strong economic and cultural ties to Shorai and were thus angered with Gysia's invasion. As for the Merchant republic, it is well known between them that the barons only care about themselves and how much money they can make in a conflict. Gysia learned this the hard way during the The Conquest of Shorai, when after a suprise attack by the Shoranians, the republic abandoned Gysia's side and retreated back to their island, which nearly derailed the entire campain for Gysia.

Agriculture & Industry

Agriculture

Most of Gysia is unsuited for agriculture, except for 2 regions. The Egras river valley, which shretches in a south-east to north-west diagonal corridor from the city of Gandasi to the town of Arghasi. The other region is the Lharn river vally, which used to make up the south of the Kingdom of North-Shorai.

Mining

The peninsula on which the kingdom was founded on is very hilly and those hills contain a lot of valuable ores, like iron and copper. In fact, the country extracted so much iron from these hills that under the Essanian empire, the province of gysia became the main source of the metal for the entire empire nearly as soon as it conquereed the country. Other metals, such as zing and nickel can be found here in small quantities.

Forestry and fishing

Those same hills and covered in forests, made up of pine and oak, which are cut down for wood. The waters around the peninsula are rich in fish stocks.

Wine making

The south of the peninsula has an ideal climate for the producting of wine. Large vignards are spread all around the hills surrounding the city of Gys and some of its residents have become extremly rich thanks to the wine trade. Gys is known by most merchants and travelers across the Mahadorian sea for having very good wine.

Shipyard

Sargassin has a large shipyard west of the city, which is protected by tall stone wall. It can build both merchant vessals and warships and receives orders on what to build directly from the king's court in Gys. This shipyard is the largest in mainland Arros after the one in Vrahlis, but it is smaller than the one on the island of Arba, which builds the Republic's armada.

Trade & Transport

Sea Trade

Gysia is heavely dependant on seabound trade, which is mainly focused on two of its largest cities, City of Sargassin and Gandasi. Sargassin in particular, is the largest port of the country and one of the bigest on the Arrosian ast coast, only behind Arbiro and Palynor

Land Trade

The city of City of Tareghasi situated in the north-west of the country, is the main hub for inland trade in Gysia, with the city of Arghasi acting as a secondary hub. Trade from the cities of Sirok, Larasor, Reigar, Gandasi and even Palynor and City of Taralan pass through here, making the city very important for the Gysian economy.

Winged Ships

The Capital, Gys, as well as Tareghasi and Sargassin also all have an airport. People rich enough to pay the exorbitan price of the ticket can travel by air in between these city and to other large cities outside the kingdom, like Palynor, Arbiro and Vrahlis.

Infrastructure

Roads

Roads, dating back to the imperial times, still snake around the country, linking all of the major cities and the capital together. Some of the newer road network, which was not made with Karthstone has begun to fall into disrepare because of a lack of maintenance and aging. However, most of the roads are still perfectly usable and help trememdiously in internal and external trade.

Sea Ports

The cities of Gys, Gandasi, Tareghasi and Sargassin all have sea ports, but by far the largest is in the city of Sargassin, which receives trade from Enask and Mahador. The city of Gandasi hosts the second largest one, which receives trade from Moratt, Casqal or Vrahlis.

Fortifications

Tareghasi has some of the most impressive fortifications not only in the country, but across the continent. In fact, during the later years of the Imperial era, the city used to be the capital of the Eastern Essanian Empire, and hosted one of the two co-Emperors. This prompted the contruction of the massive walls, which still stand to this day, protecting the city against any foreign army. Across the toren sea, the city of Casqual has the oldest fortifications in the country, as it is also the oldest city. Its original fortification are still standing to this day, a testament to Hazian engineering of the early second age.

Aqueducts and sewage

All large cities in the kingdom have an extensive sewer system, which evacuates wastes to the sea or down stream into a nearby river. These sewer systems were construtec by the Essanian empire across most large cities in the empire to improve sanitation. In the city of Gys, a large aqueduct was constructed in order to remedy the lack of a nearby water source. A river used to flow to the sea 20 km to the north. It was redirected and the water was brought to the city via a very large aqueduct. The aqueduct, along with the king's palace and the large Solain temple, dominates the city's skyline.

Airports

Being the capital, Gys has the largest airport in the kingdom, followed by Tareghasi and Sargassin. Tareghasi also has a large airfield outside the city's walls where damaged Winged ships can be built and repaired.
