Omaren

Omaren is one of the three main protagonist that will appear in the Chronicles of Hysal book series. He is the oldest member of the trio, being 4 years older than Melwyn and 2 years older than Calydan.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Omaren is a taller than average, 19 years old Mahadorian man. He is slim, but with well developped, and strong muscles, which he developed as as hunter during his teen years and which he maintains with regular training. That training also offers him great stamina, making him a great runner as well. He has dark skin and braids along the top of his head, which are pulled together and banded at the back of his head. The sides of his head are shaved.

Identifying Characteristics

Tattoo

As a Ak'aaran fire mage, Omaren was tattooed along his right arm. It has great cultural significance as it is related to both his abilities as a mage, as well as a spiritual connection to the Ak'aaraan patron goddess of firemage. It is composed of a series of lines mimicking the shape of fire spreading down his arm. As per the tradition, the tattoo is drawn onto the person's dominant side. Since he is right-handed, it was drawn along his right arm. However, the tattoo is incomplete, as he only had the first two parts done, at 8 and 12 years old, respectively. Had he been able to attend the third and final ceremony at 16 years old, his tattoo would have stretched down his arm and over the back of his hand.

Ears

Because Omaren is a fire mage reaching his 20s, his ears have grown way past human proportions, now being long, slender, and stretched into a point. They have thus become a very prominant and easy to find identifying feature of his, marking him as an elemental mage to anyone that sees him.

Special abilities

Omaren is a Firemage, a type of Elemental Mages able to control and produce fire. Fire mages are some of the most powerful elemental mages in general, but Omaren has especialy potent abilities, which have been well trained and honed at home in Mahador and later in a mage school in Arros.

Specialized Equipment

Omaren's weapon of choice is the bow, which is what he used to hunt back in Mahador. Thanks to training and natural talent, he became a very good archer, and he even claims that he was the best one in his entire village. He also always carries a bronze knife/dagger on him, which he prefers to an iron blade because he finds the colour prettier, but also because bronze is a naturaly mana-reactive alloy, and Omaren is able to easily coat the blade in his fire, making the weapon more dangerous and useful for him.

Personal history

Early Childhood

Omaren was born in the year 351, in a small town called Coraka, located in the hills south of the port city of A'anora, in Northern Mahador. When he was three, his little brother, Loharen was born. Soon after, Omaren discovered his abilities and he began training his control over them. At age 8, he received the first part of his tattoo, placing him officialy on the path of becoming a fire mage soldier in the future. As for his social life, he had become the most popular kid in town, which he liked a lot. This changed when his brother was revealed to be a Light mage, a type of mage that is even rarer than a firemage. A fierce, but amicable rivalry developed between the two over the years, which was mainly expressed in the form of pranks at each other's expence.

Teenage training

At age 12, Omaren received the sevond part of his tattoo and began serious offensive training, in both weapons such as the bow, and with his magic, which he travelled to A'anora for a few times. He also started participating in hunts organised by the villagers, which he liked a lot. He was also found to be a very good archer and he loved the sport. Meanwhile, Loharen's abilities also grew quickly and when he was around the age of 12, he was also allowed to join the hunts, along with Omaren, who was now 15.

The attack

One day of spring 368, both of them left the village along with a few teen and adult friends for a casual hunt. When they came back in the evening, they found the village burning and most people in the process of being killed. Despite Omaren's warnings, Loharen charged in, trying to save people and was captured. Omaren stayed back, which became one of his biggest regrets. Once the soldiers had left, Omaren went in the village and found his parents dead in their home.

Seeking refuge

He fled to the city of A'anora as it was the only location he was vaguely familar with, where he was homeless for a few weeks until he was taken in by a Inn's keeper and given a storage room to stay in. Many weeks into his stay, he had to a heist (Check out that story here: Heist Pt.1 for the innkeeper in order to be allowed to stay. A few weeks after that, in the summer of 368, he was approched by Benars Trayel, an alchemist who had heard of him and who wanted to recruit him in a mercenary guild. Omaren accepted and traveled to the Continent of Arros, specificaly the Kingdom of Gysia.

Becoming a mercenary

After meeting Benars's adoptive son Calydan at the former's home near the city of Gandasi, he attended a firemage school in the city of Casqal for 6 months, leaving for the city of Morrat in spring 269, where he was accepted in the Guild of Fethir. Using that membership, he tried going back to A'anora but the city was blockaded by the fleet of the Merchant Republic of Arba and he was refused entry. He had no choice but to go back to Arros.

Settling in Gysia

He moved in permanantly with Benars and Calydan in the early summer of 369, as he waited for Benars to arrange for him to be admitted to The Mage Academy of Palynor, which would give him the credentials nessessary to pass the blocade. He spent a few months getting familiar with Gysia, learning a bit of the Gysian language, traveling to the city with Calydan, who he became friends with.

Meeting Melwyn

Then, in the fall of 369, Melwyn arrived at the house, and after hearing the things he had gone through, Omaren decided to try and help him in the absence of Makhlem, his mentor. He saw it as a way to try and redeem himself regarding his brother and soon they became great friends. He helped him with archery, and gave him tips on how to better control his magic abilities. Since Calydan and Melwyn's friendship started off badly and remains rocky, Omaren serves as a kind of bridge between them and became the heart of the group.

Employment

Omaren is a member of the Guild of Fethir, a small to medium sized guild based in Moratt and operating in most of south-west Arros. He joined after finishing his magic training in the City of Casqal. He was officialy asigned to the Larasor chapter but he doesn't live or operate there for the time being and isn't an active member. However, he is allowed to remain in the guild despite this because he's their only Firemage, and those are rare. For the time being, he considers his job to be training Melwyn in Archery while he waits for a spot to open in The Mage Academy of Palynor.

Mental Trauma

Omaren has some repressed trauma steming from the night his village was attacked and his parents were killed by soldiers from both the Merchant republic of Arba, and the Shield of Saol, an anti-mage mercenary compagny. Since then, he's refused to talk about it and gets frustrated when people try to talk to him about it. For a long time (many months) after that night, he had trouble admitting that his parents were dead.

Omaren's main motivation is to find his brother. Because of the strict blocade imposed by the republic towards outsiders, omaren can't travel back there without the right credentials, which is why he wants to travel to the City of Palynor instead to become a true Calexian-grade mage and thus have the right credentials.

Religious Views

Omaren deeply believes in the Ak'aaran pantheon, specificly in Esh'Kai, the goddess of fire, who's symbol is an Ajax bird. As a Firemage himself, Omaren prays to her regulary for protection, strenght and guidance on a small altar he keeps near his bed. He also occasionaly prays to Xaakum, the Ak'aaran god of the hunt, wildlife and war, for additional strenght when needed. Lastly, he also prays Itzaca, Ak'aaran god of creation for the same things, but only sparingly, as it is not good to abuse of his favours, according to Ak'aarans.

Social Aptitude

While Omaren hold a lot of worry and frustration in his head, it doesn't really show on the outside, and he likes it that way, since he doesn't feel like he should burden other people with his own problems. However, what he also posseses is a lot of confidence in his own ablities, both magic or mundane, as a hunter, an archer or as a fire mage. He knows how to keep his cool in critical/dangerous situations.
Despite being very serious when it comes to some situations, Omaren can also be very layed back. He will often joke around and he won't shy away from a opportunity to play pranks, especialy with Melwyn, since Calydan thinks it's "immature". He also likes to talk with new people he meets when going in the city. He can even be flirtatious with them at times.

Speech

While Omaren is perfectly able to hold a conversation in Essanian with Melwyn and Calydan, he does have a distinct and noticable Ak'aaran accent while talking. He may also stutter or hesitate on some words when he's talking faster while frutrated or exited. He also switches to Ak'aaran in those situation, especialy when swearing.
