Oracle Rank/Title in Chimera D10 | World Anvil

Oracle

Known best as the advisors, forecasters, and strategist of the Blackguard, an Oracles are regularly relied upon for their knowledge of monsters and, later, mages.

From Blackguard Advisors to Thought Police

After the Brievanan Exodus, where mages were forcibly evicted from the city, a powergap was created where the city once relied on mages. With magic now outlawed and enforced by the Blackguard, monster hunters and now mage slayers, the Oracles had to maintain value within their position by providing accurate and detailed information at all times. Not many could cope with the pressures, but all jointly turned to a medicinal tea, Kingsfoil, that gave them the edge they needed. Though, with the outbreak of Tassyclopsis among their ranks, they surely got more than they bargained for.

Confined to the Tower

With the development of each of their third eyes, literally, they became a secret of the city's taskforce now. Magic was outlawed and monsters were to be slain--surely, but these abominations sought to benefit their city still; so they were useful, and thereby needed to be controlled and heavily regulated.   They were kept within the Tower of Cyclops, thereafter, and remain a well-kept secret.

Ask and You Shall Receive

What is asked of the Oracles remains just what got them into their position in the first place: precise answers to very particular questions. Only now, with the ability to see the many paths of the future, the answers given can span days. This started the tradition of encoding forecasts in cryptic and multi-meaning poems wherein the reader may derive what they will and seek a particular outcome from there.   Worse yet, these same oracles can be used to detect the thoughts of those around them, by looking at the possible futures and then acting upon what would have been or could be. While not used to prevent murders, they are used to recruit would-be Oracles, find mages, and destroy monster nests.
