The Hammershard Mountains
These are the mountains that, as Dwarvish folklore states, Halfar haised around the Absayris desert to protect his people. As the story goes, he swung a mighty hammer down, and the mountains erupden outwards at the strength of his blow. Regardless of their potentially mythic origins, there is no doubt that these mountains are the largest in the world. They tower high above the desert, and many of them have sheer cliffs that are near-impossible to climb. No one has reached the highest peaks of the mountains, though there have been many that died trying.
While they are all referred to as the Hammershard Mountains, there are actually two distinct ranges. There is the upper range, which are the mountains on the north and east borders of the Absayris Desert, and the lower range, the mountians to the south and west.
There are two peoples that inhabit the Hammershard Mountains, and they are bitterly sworn against each other. The dwarves claim the mountains as part of their ancestral birthright. They claim that since Halfar struck the mountains into existance, that the icy peaks are theirs, just as much as the sweltering desert. The Minotaurs disagree. Created by Jakular, they moved into the mountains and found them largely uninhabited. When the dwarves found the bull-headed folk in the mountains, they swore to drive them out. Thus began the fued between the two brutal peoples.
Geography
These mountains do not always make it all the way to the coasts. This means that while some coasts have stretches of largely untouched beach for miles and miles, other coastal regioons have sharp cliffs that plunge hundreds of feet to meet the briny sea. These cliffs are most severe near the center of the eastern coast.
In the southeast, the mountains part, and in that space, the dwarves erected Port Edibican. While it is not the sole port of the dwarves, it does represent most of the Clandom's nautical trade.
Ecosystem
The mountains, much like Absayris proper, are a hard place to live. Much of these mountains exist far above the treeline, meaning that most of the plantlife is left to the brush and other small vegetation. These hardy plants, though few, are highly nutritious. It is said that a dwarf can march 10 miles or more with nothing more than a Hammershard carrot in their stomach.
Climate
The seaward sides of the mountains are frequently assaulted by both sea and storm at lower altitudes, but even the lovest peaks are beyond the reach of either.
Tourism
Many affluent dwarves like to spend their summers in well protected outposts and cities low in the mountains. These places are almost never attacked by the Minotaurs anymore, and have lovely access to beaches and coastal luxuries. These places are often difficult to access, with the two best options being by boat or by Warpstone. Neither option is particularly cheap, making it difficult for a lay person to even gain access. Even if they were, however, the prices in places such as these are prohibitively expensive. Many of them are used to serving the rich and powerful, and their prices reflect that.
