The Fallen Sea

While the Great Jungle of Gerule once bordered the ocean, for some unknown reason, the sea began to recede. The resulting area became desolate. The sands left behind by the sea make it difficult to grow anything, despite the area getting rain. still, given their more central latitudes and the lack of substantial shade in the central parts of the desert, it does get rather hot when the sun shines. This is one of the reasons that the Tabaxi chose this area to claim. They have plenty of room to bask, though when there is rain, they find little cover.   Recently, there have been some terretorial disputes between the Tabaxi and the Orcs. The latter have been slowly getting pushed out of the jungle, and the former have no intentions of letting them get a foothold in the sands. While the Tabaxi account for most of the people in the Fallen Sea, other races have established themselves as well. Dwarves have taken well to the area, though some of the alterations made to sealife make them uneasy. Earth Genasi have also taken to the overwhelming expression of earth here. Many would go to the Dwarven desert or the Hammershard Mountains if the present residents were more welcoming. Some biethtire, particularly those that are desert creatures by nature have also entered the area.   Despite all of the people gathered here, no one has taken formal ownership of the land under a nation. However, that isn't to say that the area is lawless. Many who admired The Realmsplitters flock to the area, as it was where they were building a base of operations before their disbandment. In honor of the heroes they were, they keep a basic law on the Fallen Sea, making sure that the worst offenders are caught and given over to those they wronged.

Geography

This sandy stretch covers a wide area. While there are some rolling sand dunes here, that seems to be the extent of drastic changes in altitude. It has the ocean to the east and a jungle to the west, both of which have become sources of life for plants and animals inhabiting the Fallen Sea.

Climate

Situated between an ocean and a jungle, the Fallen Sea is humid for a desert, but it has little that can trap the humidity. In addition, the sands often reflect much of the sunlight, meaning that it is quite bright, and quite hot.

Fauna & Flora

Several oceanic species have adapted, or more accurately: been adapted, to survive to its now environment. Many of these adaptations were performed by clerics of Jakular, and potentially the god himself. Some adaptations make sense, but some seem like they were more expiramental. Meanwhile, in terms of plants, the dwarves have transplanted many kinds of desert vegetation here. As a result, the resulting ecosystem is a confused mix between adapted oceanic life and hardy desert life.

Vegetation

While not many types of desert vegetation survived, the dwarven wheat Hreshnek started growing exceptionally well. Since it was bred to grow in sand, it has taken to the Fallen Sea, but the wetter conditions have given the crop a little trouble. Unfortunately, this type of wheat grows very slowly. So while this area may eventually become a grassland, it won't be anytime soon due to the slow spread and growth of the seeds.   Of the 300 species of cactuses that the dwarves tried to introduce to the Fallen Sea, only 70 or so took to the new environment. Many of them are of the fruiting variety, however, meaning more food sources for places that call it home. They are growing at a much quicker rate than the Hreshnek, and some are even showing up in the far north reaches of the desert.   In addition, some kelp was made a bid more sturdy, creating a strange breed of trees. They do well in areas still near the water and near the jungle, since their ability to store water is low, and the sand doesn't hold moisture well. As the sea has continued to recede, these plants eventually wither, and new growth follows the new coast. This has led to what has been named the Walking Forest.   The clerics also managed to make sargassam bushes. They have weak root systems but are nevertheless very nutritious. The followers of Jakular have had better success at adapting them to land than the Kelp. As a result, sargassam has survived further inland than the Walking Forest.   There are also a few plants from the jungle moving east. These, without much assistance from the priests and workers of Jakular, haven't had much success in the sand. Still, the jungle is slowly claiming what the sea left behind.

Creatures

Beachworms have been changed in order to be able to ingest more kinds of things, such as the cactuses that were transplanted from the Dwarven Clandom. The strength they developed to move through wet sand allows them to move very quickly through the dry, loose sands that they now inhabit. They are on the scene quickly after a creature dies as scavengers.   Some creatures have moved in from the jungle, doing much better than their floral counterparts. Small creatures and insects have taken to the cactus and sargassam bushes, with larger predators following. Tigers have moved on the edges, their coloring giving them more of an advantage in the sand. Unfortunately, there isn't enough larger prey for them further in.    Perhaps the strangest of all that the followers of Jakular have adjusted are the fish. Many of them have been given both legs and lungs. Their mouths have also been changed to better consume land-based foods. Given that they aren't exactly fish anymore, but also have much in common with their aquatic bound bretheren, those that created them have started referring to them as fesh. They seem ill at ease on the land, but younger generations and newborn fesh have taken to the new environment like a fish to water. Fesh were also one of the big draws for Tabaxi, and one of the major reasons, aside from the warm sands and the sun, that they favor the region so much.
