Unicorn

Introduction

On Earth, assuming they ever existed there at all, unicorns are now very much confined to the realms of myth and legend. On Calmarendi they yet roam freely across many of its lands, far more openly than ever they did on Earth, and you might, if you knew more about them than most Calmarendians, consider them to be the planet’s dominant species.

They live, nevertheless, very much apart from the humans of Calmarendi, seldom venturing west of the Sierra Nevada, and, whilst their existence had never been doubted, few people alive today had ever seen a unicorn until Jennifer arrived in the Western Provinces riding one.

History

Were the Unicorns Driven out of the West by the Humans?

On the contrary. The unicorns migrated westward in response to the human settlement. In part to create a discouraging buffer zone that would deter human expansion any further towards their true homeland much further to the east but also to get closer to the humans so they might ensnare any intrepid explorers and carry them away into servitude. It is such a boon to sentient ungulates having semi-intelligent creatures with opposable thumbs at their beck and call.

Common Myths and Legends

Why did the Unicorns not Carry Jennifer away into Servitude?

  • The unicorns recognize Jennifer’s Elmetian lineage. Whilst this does not, necessarily, mean she is (or is destined to become) one of the Fae, they see her as one who is able to commune with them. Unicorns view the Fae as near equals.
  • They know of the prophesy of the Child of the Mountains; they know that it is their destiny to take her to the humans and to serve her as best they may.
