The Divergent Timelines
Concept
The concept that Jennifer, Victoria C, Colette, etc. exist in a reality so alike to that with which you may be familiar as to be, for the most part, indistinguishable from it forms the framework upon which their narrative is woven. Two versions of the same reality: in the one they do not exist, in the other they do. What really separates the two, however, is not the mere existence of these individuals but their actions which will ultimately tear the timelines apart.
Now, if there is one thing nature abhors more than a vacuum, it is a divergent timeline. For the most part, when a fluctuation in the fabric of reality creates a bifurcation of the timeline, the elemental forces of nature create synchronizing events to stop them from diverging and, eventually, bring them back together as if nothing had ever happened. Just now and then, however, things occur in one timeline or the other that cannot be counteracted or neutralized; this is when divergence occurs and the timelines finally fly apart.
Definition of Terms
The Real Timeline: The timeline in which you, dear reader, exist now; this is self-evidently true because this document does not exist in the other timeline.
Our Timeline: The timeline in which the events of Visions in Blue take place, the timeline in which Jennifer, Victoria C and Colette exist. "Our" timeline from the perspective of those whose tale this is and the ones telling it.
The Decoupling: The point at which the elemental forces of nature are no longer able to synchronize and hold together the two timelines.
Perception of the Timelines
With the (possible) exception of Natasha and Kumiko, no one in either timeline is able to perceive that theirs is not the real timeline nor, even, that another timeline exists.
In Reality
You read this and are now, therefore, aware of it, yet you do not sense or likely even believe possible this alternate reality.
And yet, all around you, faint echoes of deeds of the Elmetian Fae, of the Three Sisters, of Jennifer and friends reverberate across the timelines, if you but know where to listen; events in one timeline affecting the other, as they must if the two are ever to reconverge.
On Calmarendi
Does Calmarendi have an alternate timeline, one in which Jennifer never shows up? Perhaps, but there it might exist only as a barren, lifeless rock. Rather, think of Calmarendi as the place where the timelines finally rejoin and the universe put back to the way it should be.
When? How? Why?
Best guess at when and how: as far back as the sixth and seventh centuries when the Nymphs of Yr Hen Ogledd (The Old North) took corporeal form and mingled with the Britons of Elmet to spawn the Elmetian Fae, which would explain Jennifer and Colette, but whence came the Tyndall sisters and their forebears? And Victoria Alice Carter? The latter indicate, perhaps, multiple fractures in the fabric of reality all coming together to create the decoupling.
Why? Why not? Shit happens.
