Bounty Hunter

Now whether Jason was abiding by his remit as a “bounty hunter” exactly as it was given to him or whether an agenda of his own informed his choice of target(s) we may never know.

Occupation - Secondary

Jason was Jennifer’s election agent. Quite what cunning he had used to inveigle Jennifer and local party officials into accepting him as such none can say with any certainty. The party had assumed that, as the candidate, Jennifer had asked him to do the job and they did not question her choice. Most assumed that she had become acquainted with him through some of her other party activities, some that he had been involved in her Athershaw North candidacy at the 1987 election. Those who were a little more sceptical of his standing came to believe he and Jennifer were related in some way. Jennifer, for her part, had been under the impression he was a party apparatchik inserted to bolster her chances of winning the “key marginal” constituency. Being both good at the job and a consummate Billy Bullshitter (which some may say are one and the same thing) meant he never really came under scrutiny from anyone. Except Colette, of course.

Colette, during the course of her investigations, had convinced herself that he was, indeed, a party apparatchik but one installed to dig the dirt on Jennifer — so that she might be kept quiet once she got to Parliament — or even to scupper her campaign altogether. Fortunately for Jennifer, the party was never in a position to risk the sacrifice of Bristol North West but Colette had countermeasures prepared nevertheless. Their encounter on Calmarendi may not have been the first occasion on which the thought of “doing away” with Jason had crossed her mind.
