Gonthalas

The Drowned City

The Watery Grave of Gonthalas

Aeons before man’s rise on Albion the High Elves had mapped the seas and continents and settled the four corners of the material plane. Their knowledge outmatched even today’s most well-versed scholars’ teachings. But with knowledge comes power, and with power, corruption.   The Elves craved magic beyond the most powerful available to them. A ‘wish’ spell, fabled among today’s mortals was a mere stepping stone for these conjurers and evocators. Magic soon infiltrated the material plane at unprecedented levels, its winds weaving through all that was good and evil and amplifying it to hitherto unseen heights. The High Elves unleashed such power that Ecna himself descended from the heavens, and at great cost drained the overflow of magic from the material plane. The High Elves and their cities, having had such connection to their magic, withered and died. One by one their great capitals succumbed to disease, natural disasters and were swallowed by the seas. And so, it was for Gonthalas, white jewel of the North, consumed by the once crystal-clear water upon which it stood. The island bearing its namesake was unrecognisable after the ocean had made it its own. Forests of mangroves and other, unnatural things inhabit the ruined city now.   Today, the island and its misery is avoided with wide berths by seafaring vessels. Every captain worth their salt knows the dangers that lurk beneath the waves close to the shore. “Sea-Elves” are whispered about in hushed tones even on dry land, their cruelty only outmatched by the curse laid upon them. Even so, adventuring parties have been known to bring back great treasures from the lost elven city, but each of them returning changed men, if they return at all.
