Collena is a temperate water world in the Delvi Star System . It is the homeworld of the Regalti species, with a population of just over a billion people. In the past the planet was much more populated, reaching populations in excess of 25 Billion, but most people left the world in live in space during an event known as the Exodus.

Collena is notable in the galaxy for several features. The Planet has magnetic mountain ranges stretching across the world, and also has primeval jungles sitting miles below the surface in long extinct volcanoes. From a biological standpoint, Collena is one of the more diverse planets in the galaxy, having fully habitable land, sea, and air biomes. The world also has a moon, Sephar.

Physical Characteristics

Chemical Composition

Collena's composition is rather typical of an inner planet from any star system, with few exceptions. There's a higher abundance of Lathanide elements (or 'rare-earth' elements) near the surface of the world. The Planet has a rather high concentration of Cobalt as well. Most irregularities with the composition of this planet were thought to have occured when it collided with the much denser planet Sephar billions of years ago.

There are also areas on Collena where magnetic rock formations interfere with large swaths of the electromagnetic spectrum, making travel and communication in these areas almost impossible, even well into the Space Age. Naturally occuring Iron/Oxygen Magnetite is the most abundant mineral in these formations, but also occuring are Samarium/Cobalt minerals. These formations are rather common in many parts of Collena, and in specific lightning prone areas of the world, the rock formations are permanently magnetized. These areas inspired and influenced Regalti civilization and technology development for thousands of years.

    Plate Tectonics

    Like all rocky planets with hot core and mantle, the lithosphere (planetary crust) is broken up into several major and minor plates that float and move across the mantle over millions of years. Some of the plates are extremely active, with a great deal of volcanism, having moved great distances relative to other plates that have mostly stood still over many millions of years.

    Collena has 7 Major Plates having an area greater than 5% of the planet's surface area, 7 minor plates having an area less than 5%, and numerous micro plates, all of which are too small to meaningfully display on a map. the Planet has an active lithosphere with mantle plumes, hot zones, volcanic island chains, and more. Most of the plates move around, but there are two plates that are more or less spinning in place on top of mantle plumes, The Ordona Plate, and the Vevari-Falth Plate.

    Geologic History

    Collena was formed around 4.7 Ga (Giga Annum, or Billion Years) ago with the rest of the Delvi system, when a mollecular cloud collapsed into a planetary nebula, forming Fevaultar and the rest of the planets of the system. This is rather typical of any star system in the galaxy.

    Around 4.6Ga ago, the planet Sephar moved from the inner Delvi System as a result of a collision, and moved to the same orbit with Collena. The two worlds eventually collided, completely melting any parts of them that cooled, shifting their orbit further. The two worlds reformed in a double planetary system with the two orbiting around a common center of gravity. Large meteors continuously bombarded the worlds for another Billion years after that.

    Collena's oceans and atmosphere formed in the same way as is thought on other worlds, that the world always had the water and gases necessary that evaporated out of the rock it was trapped in. Though, sizeable amounts of these elements may have been added by impacts from comets and smaller worlds. As the planet cooled, it formed an outer layer of crust which, with small exceptions, has been repeatedly destroyed and reformed over the last 4Ga. Due to the movement of the Mantle underneath, and tidal forces from Sephar, the crust regularly breaks apart and reforms into several large continents.

    Similar to billions of other rocky planets in the Galaxy, Collena has a magnetic field, created by the interactions between the crystaline inner core and the still liquid outer core. This is important in planets with life because the magnetic field protects these worlds from harsh solar winds that would strip away a planet's atmosphere. What is unique about Collena's magnetic field is in how it interacts with its mountain ranges and the moon Sephar.

    During periods of heightened solar ativity in the star Fevaultar, solar storms blast charged particles that, when interacting with a planet's magnetic field can cause auroras near the poles. These charged particles will get funneled over the atmosphere above many of Collena's mountain ranges, creating auroras visible in very specific parts of the world. The skies above different mountain ranges will also glow different colors. One example is the mountain Sil Ventarsan, which is both the Regalti's most holy mountain and the tallest peak on the world. Auroras above this mountain are always a fiery red color, and have special significance when the skies above the mountain are glowing red at the same time the star Ventar passes over the mountain.

    As for the moon Sephar, that world also has a fully functioning magnetic field. The magnetic fields of the two worlds can interfere with each other on occasion, but usually it has no effect on the people living on either world or in the space between them. Depending on how the star Fevaultar, Collena and Sephar are aligned, especially during eclipses, the auroras are much more visible on either world. This effect is even more pronounced during solar storms.

    Shown in the image to the right is the moon Sephar as viewed from the planet Collena. During a lunar eclipse, Collena's shadow fully covers Sephar and causes it to glow anywhere from a pale red to crimson to not at all, depending on the exact distance the two worlds are from each other and how much light bends around Collena's atmosphere and illuminates Sephar. Regardless, the aurora at the poles are almost always quite visible and glowing green.

    Whenever the opposite happens and there is a solar eclipse, and Sephar is between Collena and the star Fevaultar, the skies are often dark crimson in color, and depending on proximity to mountains or the poles, the aurora are quite visible then as well.

    Collena's Moon


    As mentioned elsewhere, Collena has a single moon, Sephar. This world has its own hydrosphere, its own magnetic field, and its own evolved forms of life. At some undetermined point in the past in a previous Regalti civilization, the Regalti made it to space and had settled Sephar before the civilization destroyed itself and the two worlds lost contact with each other for many thousands of years.

    Sephar has about half the diameter and 28% the mass of Collena. Due to Sephar's unusually massive iron core, surface gravity is actually higher on this moon than Collena. Collena and Sephar both orbit around a common center of gravity that falls outside the surface of either world, making the system technically a Double Planet. The two worlds are about half a million kilometers from each other and complete an orbit around the center of gravity once every 30 days.

    Both worlds have large oceans that are affected by tidal forces and the effects can be extreme at times. Along the flat rolling beaches of Collena, the difference between high and low tides might only be a meter or two, but in several inlets that funnel the ocean into a tiny point, the tides can be upwards of 30 meters or more. Collena has an even greater effect on Sephar's tides, which can reach 60 meters in several inlets.

    The distances between Collena and Sephar make total eclipses possible. When Sephar passes between Fevaultar and Collena, it creates a Solar Eclipse that can last up to 30 minutes. When Collena passes between Fevaultar and Sephar, it creates a Lunar Eclipse that can last up to 4 hours (From Sephar's point of view, this creates a solar eclipse that lasts up to 4 hours). When these eclipses happen, each world will cast a reddish shadow over the other because the light from Fevaultar is bending around either world's atmosphere. This causes the skies to turn a dark crimson.

    As stated earlier, the Regalti developed civilization independently on Sephar and Collena. While DNA testing confirms the last common ancestor between Kella and Seph Regalti is only about 4000 years old, it isn't known how Regalti got to Sephar and how advanced earlier civilizations were. Some theories state another alien race was involved, while others say the Regalti did it to themselves. This remains the biggest mystery about the Regalti.

    Geography and Climate

    Physical Geography

    Collena has rugged mountains, rolling plains, volcanic islands, and many more land features. Contrary to popular belief, there are almost no planets in the Galaxy that are of a single geography type or a single climate type, at least not the ones that support life. Nearly every life giving world has polar ice caps, extensive mountains, expansive deserts, and large oceans separating the continents. Collena is no exception to this.

    The highest and lowest points on the planet are actually the same distance from sea level. Sil Ventarsan, the highest mountain on the world, is 9,909 meters above sea level. The Lowest point, Phenar's Hole, is 9,909 meters below sea level, though there might be even deeper ocean trenches that aren't yet explored.

    Collena is said to be a Cooler than Average world with a global average temperature of 13°C. The planet is covered in glaciers at higher elevations and virtually all land and water north and south of 85 degrees latitude are permanently covered in ice and snow. Despite being called a cooler than average world, surface temperatures can still reach in excess of 50°C in some equatorial desert regions, though it also isn't uncommon for it to snow at the equator some years.

    Collena's land is divided into 18 major climate types, determined by elevation, temperature, and ocean currents. Large areas of the planet are dominated by deserts and tropical savannahs, arid grasslands, and glaciers. The world also has its share of tropical and temperate rainforests.

    Biomes Unique to Collena

    Coral Forests

    On the coasts of the Intatha, Ikari, and Qentari continents, and very rarely in the tropics of other continents, there exists a scene that would look out of place unless at the bottom of the ocean. Originally existing on tidal areas, some of these coral forests now exist entirely on land.

    Plant-like animals root in the ground after their larval stage and grow into colossal coral and sponge structures. Animals that would normally be seen in water are adapted to living on land, including mollusks, Urchins, starfish, and more. Trees are adapted to take on the appearance of Coral to keep herbivores away.

    Volcanic Jungles

    Located on the Greknil Continent, deep in the extinct calderas of dozens of gigantic supervolcanoes, there exists hot jungles with extremely dense air. The plants and animals that live here are separated from the rest of Collena by miles of elevation and millions of years of isolation. Life found here is more varied and unique than anywhere else on this world.

    Even deeper than the Volcanic Jungles in the many thousands of miles of lava tubes connecting them all together are Mushroom forests with even more unique and bizare creatures, even by Collena standards. This biome is relatively unexplored and mostly unknown. Helioberries are notable plants from Volcanic jungles, and are loved by pretty much all Regalti.

    Sky Meadows

    Miles above the surface of Collena exists an entire ecosystem of floating plants and flying animals. Most are extremely tiny like the Cloud Flower. Some are gargantuan in size like Sky Shells, living islands so large that Regalti can step foot on them, but these are very rarely seen outside a few areas. There exists species of mammal and reptile that go their entire lives miles in the air and never even get close to the surface of Collena, even ones that don't actually fly. The most diverse of these sky meadows are high above the mountains of the Ision, Vorna, and Brevini continents.

    On Collena, coral forests mostly take the place of Earth's mangroves. Freshwater swamps on Collena have water tolerant trees, but also freshwater coral. Otherwise most surface level and aquatic biomes are relatively the same.

    Also, in keeping with every planet having something unique about it, if I were to name a plant or biome that would be unique to Earth and not found anywhere else in the galaxy, it would be...something....Cacti? Mangroves? Pine trees? I don't know yet.

    Regalti on Collena


    Unlike the sector spanning empires of the Vusinor and Maorians, or even larger civilizations that have empires stretching across thousands of light-years across the galaxy, the Regalti are much smaller and as a whole are not a united people.

    On Collena itself, the Regalti have about 60 larger nation-states, and several dozen smaller city-states, making 98 independent countries total. Like pretty much all civilizations in the galaxy with complicated political divisions, national borders are often separated by religion, geography and culture. In the past ownership of land changed hands constantly through wars and threats.

    Also in the past, before the Regalti remade contact with their sister civilization on Sephar and spread out across the Delvi System, the geopolitics of the world was entirely dominated by the Kingdom of Bevaria. This island nation once ruled most of the land and at several points in history Bevaria was at war with the entire rest of the world.

    In the present day, the world is a little different. in the 350 years since the Exodus began, most Regalti living on Collena went to settle in space, Bevaria lost nearly all of its power and fragmented into dozens of smaller countries. The world only has around a billion people living on it instead of 25 billion. There are no less than 30 countries entirely in space with more people than that.

    The Nation that is currently at the center of Collena is Argen, the Silver City, where just about anything of note that still happens on the world occurs here. Other relatively powerful nations include Old Bevaria, Tariwen, and Ikari. Many nations like Vefaria, are almost completely empty compared to how they were before the exodus.

    While all of the nations of Collena maintain their independence from each other, nearly all of them are in the same alliance and have representatives to negotiate with the space nations. As a whole, Collena is it's own political entity, and with the space nations are part of the larger and simply named Regalti Alliance, which ecompasses nearly all Regalti living in the Delvi System.

    Word Origin

    The word Collena has its origins in two separate Regalti words. "Qeltar" and "Enta". Qeltar is an ancient Bevarian word and personification of a Land god. Enta is also an ancient Bevarian word, used for a Water goddess. Other cultures such as the Fevarik had their own names for these gods (Yalle and Zhenna). Combined, the original word was Qelanta or Qeltantar, "Land and Sea", which became "The World". Over time that word morphed into Qelantar, Cellantar, Collenar, and finally, Collena.

    Other names for Collena included "ivlentar" which meant 'Under God'. "Fenthro" Which just means 'the universe' in one culture, and 'the world' in a few others. "Shalnol" which was the creator god of another culture. "Noril" which literally just means 'dirt' or 'earth'. "Kicnol", which was the name of a giant turtle-like creature worshipped in yet another early culture. There's dozens of others.

    Collena in Culture

  • Collena in religion both extinct and still practiced is often personified as two dieties that came together to form the world. As mentioned in the previous section, these two beings are the land god Qeltar and the ocean goddess Enta.

  • Collena isn't directly worshipped in any modern Regalti religion. In older religions, the planet was more land or more water, more male or more female depending on the seasons, with large religious celebrations on the equinoxes when Collena was said to be perfectly balanced. Many cultures still hold festivals on the equinox, but they either aren't religious in nature anymore or honor a different aspect of religion.

  • Collena is often used in fiction by Stellar Regalti, either as a sacred garden that all Regalti should cherish...or an inhospitable wildland that would be better off without anyone living on it.

  • Regalti on Sephar often depict Collena and its people as less advanced than they are, whether in fiction or not. It took decades of radio transmissions from both worlds to build a rocket capable of taking off from Collena and landing on Sephar, so neither civilization was less advanced than the other...

  • Regalti on Collena itself often still consider the planet to be the center of Regalti civilization, even though 99% of Regalti civilization has moved on and is leaving it behind.

  • Even though all Regalti are from Collena, most live in space or on other worlds. Those born on the planet itself are often called Kella Regalti, or Surface Regalti.

  • Less proper terms include 'Kella Adken', or 'Surface Dweller'. 'Adke' generally means 'dwelling', but is also a Fevarik word for mud.

  • Most Fevarik on Collena will proudly call themselves Mud People, or 'Adkevarik', to make a point about how much they love living on their dirty homeworld and not in some boring, sterilized space habitat.
