The Wild Duck Tavern and Inn Building / Landmark in Caelum Prime | World Anvil

The Wild Duck Tavern and Inn

Purpose / Function

Original Purpose: Serve food and beverage. It provided excellent music as well. On the second floor are rooms to rent for the night.   Current Purpose: An open loft over an artist studio.

Alterations

When the tavern closed in the early 1900s because of the hotels and bars springing up, it remained closed until it was bought by a wealthy philanthropist in the early 2000s. He turned the bottom part of the building into an artist studio and top into an open loft. He would help artists out by letting them live here. After several suicides, he sold it. While there hasn't been any more major alterations, it has been updated to fit current building standards.

Architecture

From the outside it looks peaceful, clean and homey. Sandstone bricks and hard wooden tree trunks make up most of the building's outer structure. It's difficult to see through the large, curtained windows, but the entertainment from within can be felt outside. Upon entering the tavern through the old, wooden door, joyful music with amazing, but unknown scents greet the newcomer. The bartender is buried in orders, but still manages to wave a welcome. It's as charming inside as it is on the outside. Rounded, wooden beams support the upper floor and the sconces attached to them. The tavern itself is packed. Workers seem to be the primary clientele here, which is probably the best clientele for the owner. Several long tables are occupied by happy, excited groups of people, some are dancing on the table, while others cheer them on with clapping and yelling. The other, smaller tables are also occupied by people who are probably starting to reach the point of having drunk too much, though nobody seems to mind. Even most of the stools at the bar are occupied, though nobody seems to mind more company. Some wealthier men will stop in on occasion.
