He was a controlling and abusive man because it made him feel superior and important to beat the weaker sex. He found Charity Oaksfield when she was 18 and molded her to be what he wanted her to be. When she stepped out of line, he would verbally degrade her and/or physically abuse her.
He was livid when he found out she was cheating on him. But instead of taking any credit for driving her into the arms of another man, he blamed it all on her. Then because it was her fault he killed their children, Josh, Rowena, and Annabelle before commiting suicide.
