Providence

The rise and fall of civilizations distinctly mark the history of Cabochon. These empires that rise to power seem to be ordained by a divine cosmic force guiding them to victory. Termed 'Providence' by the ancient Ari, this law of Cabochon is thought to have direct connection to a number of large elementary gems said to reside throughout the world.


Not only an explanation of golden ages, Providence is also said to be directly seeded into these victorious races themselves. The Ari are the only confirmed providence species known but speculation of other more ancient species lost to time continues to fascinate historians.

Decadence

Often seen as a separate part of Providence, Decadence is simply the process in which Providence fails and is no more. Once a providence species is created by those occupying the omphalos, they have unquestioned ordained rule over Cabochon until one of the omphalos is unoccupied. Once this happens, a providence species is said to go through numerous plagues including military blunders, natural catastrophes, and eventually infertility. Surviving Decadence is achieved by upsetting the blood pact that created the omphalos. This has been done by various means: infernal patronage, vampirism, lycanthropy, reincarnation, exsanguination, and other more sinister means. Mixed blood offspring are not affected by Decadence and are typically fully viable races of Cabochon.
