House Varkozar
House Varkozar is among the most venerable noble Dragonborn lineages of Dragness —an old and reclusive house whose reputation is not built on battlefield glory or merchant wealth, but on the quiet, iron grip of administration, counsel, and the written word. Unlike many of their noble peers who command fleets or muster wyverns, the Varkozars have long served as the stewards of law, tradition, and the mechanisms of governance. Their bloodline is traced to Varkoz the Whisperer, a cunning black wyrm of the Draconic Age said to have taught mortals the language of secrets. True or not, the family has taken that myth to heart, building their legacy on discretion, intellect, and diplomacy.
Their ancestral seat, Shadowspire Hall, is not as grand as some of the inland keeps of the Elector Princes, but it looms darkly over the northern cliffs of Dragness with a quiet authority. Within, endless archives, vaults of old treaties, and ancestral ledgers are kept under lock and oath. Members of the house are known for their stern, quiet demeanor and their signature obsidian-black scales, often paired with silver accents in clothing or jewelry. The Varkozars breed scribes, record-keepers, and politicians more than warriors, and they are famed for producing some of the most eloquent orators and archivists in all of Drania.
Culturally, House Varkozar values discretion, duty, and foresight. Its members are raised to speak only when necessary—but always with precision. In public, they often appear aloof or cold, but behind closed doors, they are known for their fierce familial loyalty and labyrinthine internal politics. Their children are educated in rhetoric, history, and law from a young age, with many spending a decade or more in service as clerks or liaisons before taking on official family responsibilities. This rigorous grooming of successors ensures the house rarely loses face or footing in Dragness' political arena.
Their motto, “Speak, and the world will kneel”, captures the heart of their power: influence through speech, law, and command of precedent. They have long maintained a network of legal scholars, magistrates, and informants throughout the capital and its surrounding provinces, and though they have little direct control outside Dragness, their hand can often be felt in courtrooms, council halls, and civil ledgers across the realm.
