Humans (Men)

Men are a fractious and contrary lot. As the oldest of the races, they should have the longest and most complicated history, yet they have forgotten much. Most of what they do remember is due to the Elves, though few care to remember.   Versatile and adaptable, Men are everywhere. In the frozen South, they are one of the only races - Elves and Trolls are the only others, barring the occasional Exile. But Men are also in the North, and the Eastern Desert, and the swamps of the West.   After the Upheaval, when the sheltered enclaves began exploring, some Men took to wandering. Whole families, from the youngest babe to the elderly grandparent, aunts, uncles, and all, packed up in carts and wagons and sacks. Leaving behind their houses and furniture, they travelled. When they could not find or make what they needed, they traded with other travelers, or with settlements - when the villagers did not chase them out of town. Some clans became trusted in enough places that they took up trading as a profession, taking pride in their art. Other clans, unwilling or unable to gain trust, simply wandered, eking out a living, fighting a reputation of thievery and child-snatching.   Not all Men who left the enclaves spent their lives wandering. Some found new places to settle, sometimes with others who wanted to start fresh, sometimes on their own. These early settlements were the first new farmsteads and villages.   The enclaves which had sheltered Men through the Upheaval were not abandoned. With the aid of the Elves and their long memories, Men set out to rebuild the cities of old. Cautioned by the Elves to not repeat the mistakes of the past, Men largely chose to leave the defense of their new cities to the stealthy Elves.
