Undeath
In Borgalor, when a person dies, the host's soul usually separates from the cadaver and returns to the Void beyond. Undeath is the condition where the soul has been prevented from leaving the body via Necromancy, which keeps the person's mind and control over their body intact after death to some degree, depending on the materials and techniques used for the process.
A lich is someone whose soul has been fully bound to their body, making them effectively immortal without the need for sleep or sustenance, but also emotionless, all of which can make the lives of mortals less relatable over time. Only four liches have existed in Borgalor, namely the Humans Morpas Ját II, Jaskíó Þúlgas V, Kazraxes Þrybþe IV and Ögöltik Kmót I, the last monarchs of Imúría, Kmarana, Zynþraka and Jörgalía, respectively, who formed an alliance known as The Tetrarchy and used their newfound powers to convert their subjects into hordes of lesser undead in hopes of conquering the world some forty years ago.
While the liches were destroyed by The Coalition during the Fell Wars, the lesser undead remain to this day and any efforts at eliminating them all have been slow at best. These undead act far more feral than their former overlords, which was done intentionally by using cruder methods that allowed for slight separation of the soul from the body, but still unable to return to The Void even as the body decays.
The final stage of such undead is known as a wraith, which acts similarly to frenzied souls bound to objects by necromancers and are thus extremely dangerous, as their mere presence weakens surrounding lifeforms, even viruses, which is one of the main reasons that Amþax is so barren. They are able to pass through small objects -including weapons and arms- or light barriers, including glass, canvas and even thin walls, and while lacking sight or hearing, can sense the presence of nearby lifeforms, which the wraith will tear apart if alerted. Unlike their corporeal counterparts, wraiths move silently and erratically, so tracking them is difficult at best, and can only be defeated by magic.
Destroying an undead means extinguishing the bound soul that forms it, something that is otherwise impossible, and is not without controversy, with some advocating for finding ways to free the undead so that they may return to their native Void instead. How this would be achieved is currently unknown.

Causes
The exact process of inducing undeath was lost after the Fell Wars, and any research on the subject is currently illegal in most countries.
