Bestiary February '23
This is a list of various animals inhabiting Borgalor made for the Bestiary February challenge of 2023.
Bookworms are small, snake-like creatures that feed mostly on carrion in the wild, particularly the hides. They are infamous for gnawing on leather-bound books and other objects made of leather, and those found in libraries and archives often fight dust bunnies there.
Hjað cormorants are native to the northwestern coast of Jælondis and Þlónó Lake in the region of Þjaris, where the native æjalans have domesticated the birds and use them to catch fish in the lake or in Niþvú Sea, and alert the owners of any visitors at home.
Jaculi are small, wyvern-like, nocturnal creatures found in the desert region of Lamþó Hills in southern Jælondis, specifically near trees or bushes that produce frankincense or similar saps which they feed on, and fiercely guard their territories by biting and injecting a painful venom into intruders using a spike on their tails.
Musk bears are the largest predators in the Southlands and fill a similar niche as bears in Jælondis. They are infamous for their strong scent, have red teeth and poisonous saliva, and often attack people and livestock.
Taiga grouse are native to Þjaris in northwestern Jælondis, where they've been domesticated by the local inhabitants for much the same purpose as our world's chickens. A number of different varieties exist throughout the countries of Þjaris, and some have been introduced to the Southlands due to their tolerance for cold environments.
Tundra pigeon is the common name for various species of birds in the Southlands, related to fruit doves on the tropical continent of Örkraz to the north. The largest species are flightless, and the males often sport colourful plumage to attract mates at springtime.
