794.II, 7 Meoii: the Night Rage
A cursed disease
For all the horror it caused, the Red Death is not the most spoken of or feared disease in the land surrounding Lanten. An older, more mysterious condition rages in the land. The Night Rage is a punishment of the most severe kind, coming directly from Sen and her ire. Those who offend the goddess face the curse of losing their mind, losing their humanity.
I never saw anyone cursed with this sickness, but I've heard and read countless tales. The process is more or less always the same. Someone starts having fever and headaches. in a few days, they start having nightmares as well as blurred vision. Bright light seems to cause more and more headaches and the person's condition worsens. In a pair of weeks, their behavior changes abruptly. Violence, delirium, and the poor soul loses their mind for good.
At this point, the victim is doomed. As they have lost all form of humanity, you can only bind them to prevent any movement, or put them down because there doesn't seem to be any hopes of recovery. Many tales don't end like this unfortunately, for in most of what I've read, they couldn't act on time. The victim had turned to chaotic and mindless violence, they have killed and vanished in the wild. People say that those who succombed from Night Rage are bound to roam the plains at night, preying on anything and anyone they can find. In all honesty, the sheer amount of testimonies is believable enough to give me chills, and I don't think I would spend any night out there, had I not Bob to protect me.
The last case I know of happened a decade ago, and the county had put together a full-scale manhunt to retrieve and neutralize a man gone feral.
