Daemon Conspiracies

Summary

Due to the secrecy surrounding the Institute many rumours and conspiracy theories have sprung up around it. One of the more persistent ones, is the idea that the Daemons are not what people have been led to believe they are. There are several groups who claim this to be true, though each group has it's own idea as to what the Daemons might actually be. To most people of Salike these groups are a laughing stock and are paid no mind other than as an amusing source of jokes.

"The Truth"

The commonly held belief, and the explanation given by the Institute, is that Daemons are evil beings released from the rift during the Great Quake: negative energy given form. This energy is in direct opposition to the essence which makes up all living beings. By capturing these beings and harnessing their energy, the Institute claim they are protecting the people of Salike while at the same time improving their lives.

Counter Conspiracy

The Institute, knowing there to be a shred of truth in amongst these conspiracies, has deliberately started many of the theories themselves in a bid to obfuscate the truth. So far this tactic has worked. The Institute is aware that any attempt to silence the conspiracy groups might simply validate their message and this is something they cannot afford to do.

Rumours abound

Divine energy from the Traveller, souls of the dead, essence torn from people, and creatures who fell from the sky are but some of the theories put forth as to the true identity of the Daemons. Everyone who believes in the conspiracies claims to have "evidence of the truth". This evidence is either never produced, or so far fetched as to be instantly discarded by any sane person. However, for all that these theories are dismissed by most most people, still they persist.
