Reginald Ravenwood

Earl Reginald Ravenwood, the Lone Flyer

Earl Reginald Ravenwood is the chancellor of King Aldred, and continues to serve as such following the king's death. A brilliantly clever man, he comes into great conflict with Edward Whitemount as both vie for the throne. Reginald is the head of House Ravenwood, a cadet dynasty of the royal house. He is therefore the only recognised male-line heir of Aldred, though the connection is over 300 years old. Reginald is also closely connected to Prince Riordas Accuran, as Reginald served as ambassador to Acutania in Riordas' youth.   Ravenwood believes in doing things by the book, and often despises those who prefer to deviate from it. He struggles to combine his lust for the throne with his respect for the law. He kids himself as to why he wants the throne, insisting to himself that only he can guide the realm forwards.

Personal history

He was born to Lionel Ravenwood, Earl of Glendale, and his wife Belynda. The Ravenwoods are a cadet dynasty of the kings of Eremere: House Syrincore . As of 998 EL, they are the only known male relatives of Aldred.   Reginald had a fulfilling childhood but didn't live up to the military expectations of his father. As heir to Glendale, he was expected to become the Marshal-in-Chief of Eremere, an appointment granted to House Ravenwood for centuries. However, he was merely on par with his peers and he took far more interest in diplomacy and politics.   At age 28, his father died. King Aldred approached him and asked sceptically if he wanted the post of Marshal. Reginald rejected, opting instead for the position of Ambassador to Acutania, where he knew the young Riordas Accuran.   After years of service, Reginald worked his way up to Chancellor of Eremere. To have a career and prove himself as more than just a man born into a role was a crucial ambition.
"Aldred's greatest folly was his blindness to the greed of man." - Lord Ravenwood
As Aldred grew older and his wife grew barren, Reginald realised before most that the succession was in danger. Attempting to remedy this, he implored his cousin to consider his choice of celibacy but the king would not have it. All his work over the preceding decades would unravel should a civil war break out over the crown. He began working on covert means of ensuring the throne passed to himself - who better to guide the realm? Before long, the greed and ambition enveloped his good intentions and the noble had transformed into a callous hubristic egotist.

Employment

From his late twenties, he ruled as Earl of Glendale and from this role sparked a career as an ambassador in Acutania. As the years passed, he earned promotion after promotion before becoming Chancellor of Eremere; the king's right-hand man.
