Queen Amelie is, as the consort of King Aldred the Good, queen of Eremere, and has been for fifteen years by the start of the series. By blood, she is of House Whitemount and sister to High Earl Edward Whitemount. She also features as a POV character during the series.
Appearance
Amelie is a naturally elegant woman, and she wears this with unmistakable pride. Her sharp chin is always held high, with green beady eyes staring down at those she speaks to. Long flowing golden hair reaches her waist, where a tight black belt fastens her royal blue dresses to her slim figure.Mental characteristics
Personal history
Amelie was born to High Earl Richard 'the Formidable' Whitemount of Dregonvell and his wife Maria Tarnell, a lady of Lylelor. She was the third and final child of the couple, behind Cassian and Edward.
The lady had a troubled early childhood; she idolised her father and craved for him to be proud of her. However, when she was five her eldest brother, Cassian, died. The grief tore her father from the family, and most of his final years were spent fighting the war in Tembra. In 966, when Amelie was 12, her mother committed suicide, and seven years later her father died of stiff fever. Her last surviving immediate family member was her brother, Edward, who was far from his father's son. In the rift between the two of them, Amelie had firmly sided with her father, leaving her relationship with Edward torn. She shared her father's disgust at Edward's bastard, and aside from the funeral of their father and her wedding to King Aldred, the siblings saw little of each other.
Shortly before his death, Richard was keen to stabilise his family and entered his daughter into a betrothal with King Aldred at her own suggestion. In spite of a thirty-two year age gap, Amelie was set on becoming consort, even at her young age.

The decision was easy.” - Amelie regarding her marriage to AldredDespite being betrothed since 967, it was not until 983 that Amelie and Aldred married; the king did not believe Amelie was ready to enter into married life or into the royal court. He was also concerned with marrying a woman so young and waited to make sure Amelie was still content with marrying a man so many years her senior. During her time as queen, Amelie was well-respected among courtiers and nobility alike. Her working relationship with Aldred was professional and efficient. She was the first consort in some time to take such a keen interest in the management of the realm, and her attendance at council meetings ranks among the highest of any councillor in Eremere's 400-year history.
